We work across Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Portsmouth and Southampton, from 30 venues, providing programmes to over 40,000 people every year. Programmes include multiple early years settings, Daycamps, community activities, the annual national Young Carers Festival, and supportive housing for young people and families experiencing homelessness.
Job Purpose
This role will lead on the delivery of Daycamps, YMCA’s school holiday programme, taking place Monday to Friday each school holiday. A range of exciting activities are provided to school age children. Activities are planned and delivered in accordance with each child’s needs, and range from adult-led and structured, through to supporting children to explore their own interests, including outdoor sports, team games, trips, crafts and cooking. Children are encouraged to spend as much time playing outdoors as possible. The postholder will lead a team of playworkers during school holidays, and work with the manager during term time to design, market and resource an exciting programme.
The 56-place community nursery operates throughout the year ensuring every child has the very best start in life. During term-times, the postholder will work as an EYP in the pre-school room.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
At all times work within the YMCA Way
During term times, provide indoor and outdoor play-based experiences to children in line with YMCA’s pedagogy and curriculum, and in adherence to nursery policies and procedures. Act as keyperson to a group of children.
During school holidays, lead a team to provide indoor and outdoor play-based experiences to school children based on the needs and interests of each child, and in adherence to policies and procedures, including:
Session preparation and clear down of materials, equipment and refreshments.
Planning and leading of art, drama, games and other activities
Supervising children during the activities and supporting positive behaviour
Supervising children off-site including beach trips and walks
Supervising groups of children visiting the lavatories
Supervising lunch time, usually in dining room
During Daycamps, take the lead on ensuring excellent communication between the nursery, Daycamps, catering, housekeeping and maintenance staff.
Actively monitor and support the safety, security, physical and emotional welfare of the children, reporting any concerns immediately to the designated safeguarding lead or a senior member of staff.
Be a positive role model for children and other adults.
Follow YMCA’s policies and procedures at all times, including but not restricted to: staff ratios, safeguarding and child protection, and health & safety, escalating concerns immediately to a senior member of staff.
Actively identify children who may be in need of enhanced support, eg because of a potential SEND or safeguarding need.
Positively engage with the Daycamps and nursery team, parents and carers, and others at wider YMCA teams.
Act in the interests of your own safety and the safety of others at all times
Attend training sessions and staff meetings as necessary.
Anything else reasonably requested by the management of the charity.

Person Specification & Key Competencies
Qualifications and Experience:
Qualified in early years or play work to level 3, or equivalent experience and willingness to train.
Experience of play and supervision of children aged 3-12.
A good understanding of the developmental needs of children.
Some knowledge of health and safety (training will be given).
Some knowledge of safeguarding (training will be given).

This position will be subject to the normal terms and conditions for working within the YMCA.
