Job Description : Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This post is suitable for qualified psychologists wanting to work in the field of clinical neuropsychology, with an interest in adult neuro-rehabilitation. The focus of this role is to contribute to the provision and further development of a high quality clinical neuropsychological service for adults with chronic neurological needs resulting from acute or traumatic brain injury causing cognitive dysfunction as well as neurological and/or neuropsychiatric disorders.

This post will provide a neuropsychological service to patients within the Neurorehabilitation Unit, under the supervision of the NRU Highly Specialist Clinical Psychologist. The postholder will work in collaboration with team members to develop intervention-focused assessments and provide advice on the management of individual patients. As a scientistpractitioner, the postholder will be implementing interventions which are theoretically driven and, where appropriate, will participate in research projects. The post-holder will also begin to develop clinically relevant research and development projects with the support and advice of the Highly Specialist Clinical Psychologist in Therapy and Rehabilitation Services and the Head of Neuropsychology.

Knowledge and Qualifications
Essential criteria
Honours degree in psychology or related disciplines, and a Doctorate and/or PhD level in clinical psychology / neuropsychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS
Specialist knowledge of neuropsychological syndromes and functional neuroanatomy Specialist knowledge of neuropsychological assessment techniques and psychometrics
Desirable criteria
Doctoral level research completed in a relevant area of clinical neuropsychology
Knowledge of interventions and neuro-rehabilitation and an ability to guide and advise medical / nursing and therapy staff on these principles
Knowledge of further educational and support systems / services for cognitively impaired adults
Experience
Essential criteria
Previous experience presenting to peers / colleagues on a range of clinical and research issues
Previous experience presenting to peers / colleagues on a range of clinical and research issues
At least one specialised clinical neuropsychology placement during clinical training, or in previous work experience
Desirable criteria
Neuropsychological experience across a range of clinical settings, client ages and neuropsychological syndromes
Experience of the application of neuropsychology to rehabilitation settings gained in training or previous employment
Skills and Abilities
Essential criteria
Demonstrates understanding of, and ability to, manage the needs of patients with acute and longterm disability, including the use of supportive counselling skills as appropriate
Demonstrates professional and effective verbal and written communication skills including excellent negotiation skills with patients, carers and other health professional staff in service delivery
Ability to communicate highly sensitive information to cognitively impaired and/or psychologically vulnerable people and their carers, who may have significant barriers to understanding or acceptance
Management of verbal aggression, inappropriate behaviour and risk of physical aggression from people with a behavioural / cognitive disturbance
Communication
Essential criteria
A high level of interpersonal and communication skills
Must be able to cope with highly emotive and psychologically challenging demands of working with neurologically impaired patients for long periods of time
Must be able to communicate effectively with a wide range of people in a sensitive, caring and nonjudgemental manner
