We are recruiting for experienced Band 4 theatre assistant practitioners who are interested in our very busy Day Surgery unit at the Nottingham University Hospitals based at The Nottingham Treatment Centre. We care for a wide range of day surgery and elective major surgical patients and consistently receive positive feedback.

Day surgery is a journey for our patients from admission to discharge.

Assistant Theatre Practitioners are an integral part of the surgical team in providing safe and effective care for patients during the perioperative and post-operative period. They perform circulating and scrub roles for a range of surgical cases working alongside Surgeons and Theatre Practitioners to ensure that every surgical procedure is safe and as effective as possible. This will include specific clinical tasks and responsibilities as delegated by Registered Theatre Practitioners.

In addition the post holder will develop and maintain knowledge, skills and competencies as an Assistant Theatre Practitioner within a specific clinical setting and ensure completion of the remaining modules of the Foundation Degree Programme.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The TAP will participate as part of the peri-operative team, will assist in patient care during the peri-operative period by supporting the multidisciplinary team in both the circulating and scrubbed roles.

Under direct supervision of a Registered Theatre Practitioner, the post holder will provide skilled assistance to the surgeon in the operating theatre, “scrubbing” for procedures in which they have been assessed as competent, excluding NCEPOD 1 emergencies.

Apply aseptic techniques and infection control and other risk management techniques to all aspects of the role.

Prepare theatre, instrument trays, consumables and equipment in the correct and timely manner.

Utilising effective communication skills to assist in the preparation of the environment and equipment and acting as a link between the surgical team and other parts of the theatre and hospital.

The post holder will demonstrate appropriate knowledge and skills in relation to the procedures being undertaken.

Attend Team brief and adhere to the surgical safety check list at all stages.

Adhering to the correct method of hand scrubbing, donning of sterile gloves and gowns.

Assisting in skin preparation and draping of the surgical field.

Prepare and maintain sterile trolleys and the operative field, and be responsible for ensuring all swabs, needles, instruments, prosthesis and consumables are accounted for in conjunction with a registered practitioner as per policy.

Working alongside the surgeon and team during the surgical procedure, maintaining a sterile environment, safely passing the correct surgical instruments and materials within the sterile field in order to ensure safe and efficient completion of surgical procedures.

Anticipating the needs of the surgical team and respond effectively.

Safely handling, recording and dispatching specimens and used instruments and consumables in line with Trust policy.

Disposing of clinical waste safely and appropriately in line with Trust policy.

Undertakes the roles and responsibilities of a Health Care Assistant (Band 2) when required.

Capturing and maintaining patient data / documentation and any other information required for auditing / quality issues. Documentation will be countersigned by the Registered Practitioner.

Carry out expected role without the need for constant supervision although recognising limitations and seeking direction when necessary.

Use initiative in planning daily and weekly routines.

Make a contribution to the development of patient care and setting standards.

Maintain good communication with others including answering the telephone in a courteous and professional manner.

Be aware of need for own personal development and be prepared to attend and undertake any necessary training, being aware of the need to develop oneself and to strive to increase personal knowledge.

Assist and participate in the implementation of productive operating theatre initiatives

Have a clear understanding of their responsibilities relating to their duty of care

To undertake any other duties which may, reasonably be required.

Essential criteria
GCSE English & maths Grade C or above / or equivalent
Currently working as a Theatre Assistant Practitioner Band 4
Foundation Degree in Perioperative practice or a BSc Health and Social Care
