Position Summary

The Public Health Institute is expanding its communications team to include a Multimedia Communications Associate, who will enhance the visibility, impacts and promotion of PHI and its programs through creative services and multimedia storytelling with a focus on graphic design, video, and visual production for our website, social media, publications, presentations and other communications products. The multimedia associate will help bring research to life, propel community engagement and action on public health policy and legislative priorities, and tell the story of PHI and its programs’ strengths and unique expertise to funders and other partners, through the creation of compelling, direct and easy-to-understand graphics, photos, audio and videos. The associate will work with and tell the stories of systemically excluded communities, serving as a partner, a learner/listener and collaborator, with an understanding of best ethical practices for collecting and reflecting community stories.

This role will work closely with all members of the Communications team to develop visuals, content and branding that bring PHI and the work of its programs to life. While PHI is currently remote, this position will eventually require in-person asset collection in the Bay Area and Northern California, so should be locally based.

Pay: $59,759 to $72,666 per year. The typical hiring range for this position is $59,759 to $72,666 based on 100% FTE. The starting salary is determined based on the candidate’s knowledge, skills, and experience.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Develop visual, multimedia, audio and video assets as an integrated component of a communications strategy
Produce short-form, fast-turnaround, web and social media content, including video and graphics, which reflect the priorities and values of PHI and our programs.
Create longer video content, including collaboration with stakeholders, initial conception (storyboarding, etc.), estimates for media development; oversee pre- and post-production, review and release
Support advocacy, outreach, and promotion of program impacts through the creation of digital advocacy products and graphics
Assist with writing, editing, scheduling, and distribution of digital communications including social media, advocacy campaigns, webpages/site updates, stories, newsletters, and announcements
Actively identify opportunities to create or reuse story/photo content
Identify, capture and produce a consistent stream of visual imagery from PHI programs, stock, and other sources, including identifying and creating new opportunities to collect photo and video images from PHI work
Maintain and lead visual brand integrity and consistency process across organization and program materials, channels and platforms
Support senior leadership with the creation of presentation decks, pitch materials and other materials as needed
Collaborate and support on projects and initiatives of the communications team and other PHI teams and programs
Own end-to-end production of multimedia projects
Oversee the development of a cross-org system for managing multimedia assets
Ensure internal practices and policies meet any and all trademark/copyright requirements for image, music, audio and video sharing
Perform usability testing and quality assurance of media elements used across platforms and for mobile. Ensure media is accessible for all users, including those with disabilities.

Minimum Qualifications
3 years of multimedia experience, with a portfolio that demonstrates graphic, video and design expertise, creativity and strong storytelling skills
A portfolio of work, design approach and aesthetic that reflects and integrates a strong commitment to racial, gender, and economic justice and their intersections
3 years of experience in Adobe Creative Suite, including Premier, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, After Effects
Demonstrated ability to write in powerful, compelling, clear, easy to grasp language, especially in short-form writing including short descriptions, headlines and social media descriptive content
Experience with communications platforms including Mailchimp, WordPress and Canva (or equivalent/similar platforms)
Knowledge of best practices/trademark/intellectual property requirements for producing videos, sharing images, purchasing music licensing, archiving product documentation
Familiarity with best visual practices on mobile devices social media platforms
Understanding of best practices for print, video and digital accessibility
Preferred Qualifications
Self-starter with excellent project, time management, and organizational skills
Ability to work well with diverse work styles and personalities in a team-based approach
Ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced work setting with diplomacy and composure, often in a rapid-response environment where time is of the essence
Ability to take instruction, guidance, and constructive criticism well, and implement feedback into the next iteration of designs
Experience working in non-profit setting
Availability for occasional work on evenings or weekends
Experience in documentary film, promotional, or interviewing videos
Experience and understanding of public health
Animation and/or motion graphic experience
Development of content for mobile
Sound mixing, scoring and other postproduction audio and/or Podcast creation experience
