Edge and Security Services (ESS), part of Windows & Devices (W+D) org, provides integrated, intelligent, and secure services to all of Microsoft’s engineering teams to ingest, protect, and distribute Microsoft products at scale. ESS is chartered with the following responsibilities:
Lead and provide a comprehensive suite of PKI lifecycle management services. We maintain the highest standards of both logical and physical security to ensure that Microsoft’s brand remains trusted and secure.
CodeSign all products delivered to Microsoft’s customers. We sign all software binaries installed on a customer’s machines as well as many of Microsoft’s services components.
Provide cross-industry malware scanning capability to Microsoft. To help ensure that all product teams are compliant with policy, we provide an anti-malware scanning service that is powered by many of the major third-party Anti-Malware engines (including Windows Defender).
Provide regional “digital manufacturing” services to sign product bits, release, store, and distribute those to global customers.
Manage Microsoft’s Product Activation and Licensing services.
We work on massive-scale cloud services that securely distribute software content to billions of Windows and Linux devices. Our technology empowers customers around the world to keep their devices up to date and secure.
Our services are actively utilized for Windows, Windows Server, Office, SQL Server, and many other products. Over 250M licenses are issued to our customers every month. Our unique engineering challenges are scale – we have close to 5B+ transactions per month, and a diversity of workloads – we sign and scan binaries, drivers, AAA games, and other digital contents. Ultimately, we are responsible for code signing, anti-malware scanning, and distributing software for all of Microsoft, and what we do has a company-wide impact. High level overview
As a Software Engineer, you are expected to provide critical thinking and a high degree of technical innovation and attention to detail while serving as a trusted advisor to your project team. You will need to balance many complex and competing technical priorities and be able to actively architect, design, develop, and test solutions.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities and common tasks include –
Writing clean code with well thought-out design, with focus on quality, simplicity, and maintainability.
Putting customer’s perspective and experience first when designing systems.
Communicating effectively and collaborating with other disciplines to deliver high quality solutions from envisioning to deployment to live site reliability.
Driving improvements with design reviews, code reviews, and test case reviews.
Understanding and adapting to new technologies, tools, methods and processes from Microsoft and industry.
Helping with driving future state architecture changes for the group.
Improving service fundamentals, capacity planning, performance, reliability, and monitoring.
Role modeling Microsoft Values: through behaviors and actions.
Qualifications
Required educational qualification: BS in computer science or equivalent.
Skills (must have)
Experience:
4+ years of solid Design/Development/Testing experience with products or services using various technologies.
2 years of working on system/solution architecture and/or designing services.
Architecture / Design:
Extensive understanding and hand on experience with enterprise architectural patterns.
Experience with Microsoft tools and technology stack.
Engineering Practices:
Good experience on Requirement/Design/Code Review & Inspections practices.
Experience with any of the following testing & troubleshooting: performance testing, security testing, privacy testing, accessibility testing.
Other skills:
Ability to work in cross functional teams and strong interpersonal skills.
DevOps experience with strong passion for live site reliability.
Excellent problem-solving and debugging skills with a solid understanding of testing practices.
Excellent communication & cross-group collaboration skills.
Skills (nice to have)
Knowledge of .Net, Microsoft Azure technology.
Knowledge of analytics, data mining, data visualization and machine learning.
Good understanding of agile development practices.
Personal Screening (Cloud Screening) –
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to, the following specialized security screenings:
Microsoft Cloud Screen: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
