This unique program will provide two students researchers with the opportunity to participate in a substantive and impactful program of research, under the supervision of NIA staff, which will contribute to healthy ageing in Canada today and for generations to come.The challenges and opportunities posed by Canada’s ageing population require significant advancements in public policy, healthcare delivery and financial security including areas as diverse and varied as homecare, access to appropriate vaccinations, transportation, affordable housing, pension reform, age-friendly communities and equity. For the 2022 program, NIA Summer Scholars will be focusing on areas including:Bringing the “Green House Project” model of resident-centred long-term care to CanadaWhat would ageing and dementia-friendly communities look like across the country?Promoting and supporting Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORCS) and healthy ageing within the communityHow does diabetes affect the ageing process, diverse communities, and how policy can play a roleOther research duties as assignedCanadian undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at an accredited university, who are eligible to work in Canada and passionate about health and financial research, are encouraged to apply. Applications from any discipline will be considered.Summer Scholars will be supported by NIA staff and paired with mentors in the field of research they are pursuing. The program will run from May 1, 2022, to August 31, 2022, with 35 hours per week. Join us and help make Canada the best place to grow up and grow old.Job ResponsibilitiesSummer Scholars will actively collaborate on a program of research related to successful and healthy ageing in Canada, which will make a substantive contribution to the field.The responsibilities of Healthy Ageing Scholars may includeConducting literature reviewsCollecting and analyzing dataPreparing materials for submission to granting agencies and foundationsPreparing interview questionsRecruiting and/or interviewing research participantsMaintaining interviews records and safeguarding confidentiality, as requiredSummarizing/transcribing interviewsProviding access to all data for the supervisor and NIA staff membersAttend project meetings, seminars, presentations or other events if necessaryPrepare progress reports, project summaries, final reports, articles and presentationsPrepare and deliver a Capstone Presentation for RTOERO and NIA membership based on your learnings and experience at the NIA, at the conclusion of the Internship.Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned depending on the individual requirements of the research project.QualificationsMinimum qualifications/requirementsAcademic and/or work experience related to the health, social well-being and/or financial security of older adults, including but not limited to:ageism, social isolation, elder abuse, poverty, affordable housing, accessible transportation, age-friendly environments, wellness, illness prevention, access to safe and appropriate medications, advance care planning, access to high quality care and providers, accountability standards and emergency preparednessExperience with specialized software or datasets, if required by the scope of the research projectSatisfactory academic progressRequired skills & demonstrated knowledgeResearch and data analysis skillsStrong writing and communications skillsKnowledge of project and time management methodsComputer skillsHighly collaborativeWorking environmentWhile our offices are in Toronto, this is a remote position.
