Job Description : DEFINITION

*** MUST APPLY ONLINE *** Recruitment Type: Open Certification SUMMARY OF DUTIES Performs light and heavy custodial duties as well as raking of debris and trash and maintenance activities; keeps assigned rooms, playground, building or office space clean and sanitary. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Custodians may work either day or night shifts under the supervision of one of the following Custodian Engineer, Head Custodian I, II, III or Operating Engineer at a school or office facility. On occasion, the supervisor may not always be on the premises during the time a Custodian is working. The primary responsibility of this position is to clean classrooms, restrooms, locker rooms and showers, gymnasiums, cafeterias, offices, and as time allows, also maintain the grounds. An incumbent follows a daily routine under established procedures; however, normal assignments may be altered because of special events, emergencies or absenteeism. Most work is performed inside buildings but assignments do vary and outdoor work may be common for some positions. The work of custodians involve the use of a variety of hand tools, power equipment and cleaning materials. This class of Custodian is distinguished from the class of Gardener in that the latter only works days while operating motorized equipment in the cutting, trimming and planting of grass and plants requiring some knowledge of turf maintenance and horticulture. A Gardener is not normally responsible for performing custodial duties. REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

High School diploma, GED equivalent or higher should be submitted electronically at the time of application
If hired, applicants who did not submit proof of high school graduation or GED must do so by the end of their 6-month probation period in order to continue employment with the district
Foreign diplomas and degrees must include proof of equivalency, issued by an agency approved by US Department of Education, at the time of submitting the application.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SPECIAL LICENSE OR LANGUAGE SKILLS

Education: Must possess a secondary (i.e., high school) school diploma, its equivalent (GED), or higher at the time of application or by the end of 6-month probationary period. Experience: Six months of custodian experience in a school or business setting is required. SPECIAL LICENSE OR LANGUAGE SKILLS A valid Class C California Driver’s License and demonstration of insurability at standards rates, or an alternative means of transportation, may be required for some positions in this classification. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Employees must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential duties of a position with or without reasonable accommodation and without hazard to themselves or others. Shall be required to move and/or lift materials and equipment up to fifty (50) pounds.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties of positions in this class include, but are not limited to:

Sweeps, mops, strips, waxes and polishes floors;
Scrubs and cleans toilets and sinks; washes walls, showers, light fixtures, windows, etc.;
Vacuums and shampoos rugs and carpets;
Cleans mirrors and fountains;
Dusts furniture;
Empties and cleans waste receptacles;
Refills dispensers;
Cleans spills, accidents, etc.;
Hoses off walks and lunch areas;
Assists in thorough cleaning and restoration of facilities during school vacations;
May operate scrubbing, buffing machines, steam cleaners and other related equipment;
Picks up debris;
Rakes leaves;
Washes off and paints over graffiti;
Replaces light bulbs;
Vacuums and cleans pools and pool decks;
Cleans out rain gutters;
Operates power sweeper and back pack air blowers to clean up walks and grounds;
May sand and refinish floors;
May hand water special areas;
May weed and cut bushes;
Uses plunger to unclog plumbing;
Replaces washers and tightens valves;
Adjusts height of chairs and tables;
May board over broken windows;
Repairs pencil sharpener;
Lubes desks, doors, lockers;
Makes minor repairs to doors and lockers;
May replace or adjust sprinkler heads;
Moves furniture and equipment;
Locks and unlocks doors and gates;
Arranges furniture for meetings;
Raises and lowers flag;
Unloads materials and distributes books and supplies;
Operates fire extinguishers to put out small fire;
Reports vandalism and stray animals to police;
Requests people loitering before or after school hours to leave;
Performs other related duties

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Knowledge of:

Proper materials, methods and equipment used in a school or business setting to clean, polish and wax building surfaces and furniture;
Pool maintenance procedures including filter chemicals;
Dangers of improper use of equipment, materials, etc.;
Safety procedures and methods.
Awareness of OSHA standards

Skills in:

Safely operating mechanical/motorized equipment.

Ability to:

Operate motorized equipment such as vacuums, shampooers, power sweepers, back pack air blower, buffers, etc.;
Operate hand tools such as plungers, wrenches, brushes, mops, hammers, rakes, hoses, etc.;
Use equipment such as charts and ladders safely;
Read and follow work schedules;
Follow oral and written directions;
Cooperate with other workers, supervisors and certificated staff;
Make minor mechanical repairs.
Willingness to work in unpleasant situations;
Willingness to work day or night shift;
Willingness to work in hazardous situations such as working at nights alone, on ladders, etc.;
Maintain awareness of ethnic, religious, cultural and sexual differences.

APPOINTMENT
Employees who receive a regular appointment to the class must serve a probationary period of one hundred and thirty (130) days of paid service. During this period, an employee must demonstrate an overall satisfactory level of performance; failure to do so shall result in the employee’s termination without right of appeal.

Pay is based on actual hours worked.
Appointed candidate shall start at Step 1. Upon completion of 130 days probation and satisfactory evaluation, employee shall be advanced to Step 2. All other step advancement is granted each year after probationary period up to the maximum listed salary.
