About the Position
Are you passionate about learning how the human body works? Do you enjoy working alongside doctors in a clinical setting? As an autopsy support professional, you’ll have the opportunity to use your medical knowledge to support the 4th largest Medical Examiner jurisdiction in the nation!
The Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner is seeking a knowledgeable and skilled Forensic Technician to join our team! You’ll contribute by participating in autopsies and recording relevant findings into our case management system.
About the Office of the Medical Examiner
Join a team dedicated to providing reliable and trustworthy medical investigations of deaths in our community! The Office of the Medical Examiner is a county agency charged under Arizona Law to perform medical investigations of certain types of deaths. The goal of these investigations is to determine the medical cause (disease and/or injury) of the death to help improve the public’s health and safety. Our investigations inform families, the public and its agencies, and other community stakeholders in the hope that future deaths may be prevented. We are looking for individuals to join our collaborative team to provide compassionate service to the people of Maricopa County.
Position Qualifications

Education
High school diploma or GED
Experience
One year of experience working directly with decedents and/or patients in a medical environment
OR
An Associate’s degree or completion of 60-semester units from an accredited college or university in a life science, nursing, or criminology field may substitute for the minimum requirements on a year-for-year basis.
Other Requirements
The successful candidate will be required to complete a post-job offer medical evaluation in order to use N95 respirators.
Our Preferred Candidate has
Associate’s degree or higher in a life science, nursing, criminology, or a related field
Two or more years of experience working directly with decedents and/or patients in a medical environment
Experience assisting with postmortem examinations
Experience working or volunteering in a medical examiner/coroner’s office
Experience working with decedents
Training in evisceration techniques
Training in x-ray
Training in forensic science
Paramedic, emergency medical, or surgical training
Essential Job Tasks
The tasks listed are a representation and not an all-inclusive list of essential job tasks for this position.
Uses surgical techniques to assist in autopsies by opening bodies, removing internal organs for pathologists’ examination, and closing bodies
Takes, develops, and ensures appropriate quality radiographs for examinations
Inventories and records clothing, personal effects, and valuables
Collects, preserves, labels, and records tissue samples and specimens for toxicology, histology, and microbiology
Collects, labels, records, and secures evidentiary materials, such as trace evidence, ammunition, and other objects
Measures and records the weights of internal organs as they are removed
Documents exam-related information into the case management system
Cleans and disinfects examination tables, instruments, equipment, and examination rooms
Transports decedents to and from the body storage cooler using a pallet jack and proper lifting mechanics
Takes photographs and fingerprints
Stocks examination suites with required PPE, instruments, and supplies
Working Conditions
Sufficient strength and physical and emotional stability to work under adverse conditions. Must have the ability to work with decedents in a decomposed state and work in malodorous conditions. Weekend hours may be required based on the selected schedule.
Selection Procedure
The Maricopa County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates considered to be the most highly qualified. Those selected will be assessed based on the evaluation of listed education and experience. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a list provided by Human Resources.

Basic life and basic accidental death & dismemberment insurance equivalent to one times an employee’s annual base salary is provided at no cost, with the option for employees to purchase additional coverage including spouse and child life insurance. Disability insurance is available to replace a portion of an employee’s salary should they experience a short-term illness or injury. Retirement Eligible employees are covered by one of several State-sponsored retirement pension plans, including the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) and the Public Safety Personnel Retirement System (PSPRS). Additionally, there’s the option to contribute to a 457(b) Savings Plan that provides employees with a variety of investment opportunities. For those employees who retire from the County and from their retirement system, and have accrued 1,000 or more hours of sick leave, the County makes a $10,000 contribution to a Post-Employment Health Plan set up on their behalf to be used for payment of eligible out-of-pocket healthcare expenses.
