Program Summary
The Second Chance Youth Garden is a unique program of Second Chance that combines academic support, youth workforce development, and urban agriculture. The Youth Garden Program is an eight-week program for young people ages 14-21. Designed to divert youth away from the justice system, the youth garden program reengages youth in school and exposes them to meaningful work. Our program combines hands on work experience, classroom and experiential learning, individualized case management, and youth leadership and development opportunities. Working in underserved communities, the youth garden program aims to: make healthy food available, cultivate food justice, and help move youth toward successful high school graduation, higher education and employment.Who We’re Looking For Youth Garden Program Coordinator/ Manager (DOE), Full-time

The Youth Garden Program Coordinator/Manager (DOE), Youth Programs reports to the Senior Director of Programs and is responsible for overseeing the day to day operations of the Youth Garden Program. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:
Farming:

Work alongside Urban Farmer/Educator II to:
maintain garden sites using complete organic practices at both garden sites including but not limited to planting, transplanting, pest, and disease management, weeding, watering, fertility management, compost maintenance and production, harvest, and post-harvest handling.
Manage garden sales including farm stand operations and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)- development, outreach, cash and invoice handling

Education and Program Support:

Provides all oversight for current and future elements of the Youth Garden Program including leading the Youth Garden team
Oversees outreach and recruitment efforts
Maintain relationships and develop new relationships with partner school sites and other referring entities/organizations.
Develop and implement all program curriculum, coursework, and case management
Work alongside Urban Farmer/Educator II to facilitate groups of youth in the garden Co-teach programming, evaluations, lessons, and youth activities (both indoors and outdoors) along with other program staff
Prepare for and facilitate other essential program components when needed (cooking class, team building etc.)
Monitor youth program participation, attendance, and progress in compliance with agency data collection system
Facilitate any referrals to appropriate community-based programming or services as needed
Chaperone participants at program related events or field trips
Assist Second Chance staff with projects, which promote agency programs, events and fundraising as needed
Communicate with parents, teachers, probation staff, or other community partners to coordinate services as needed
Collaborate with development staff to secure short- and long-term funding for the Youth Garden Program
Use Motivational Interviewing techniques and positive communication when working with all participants

What Skills Do You Need?
This is challenging work. A positive “can do” spirit is a must.
Qualifications

Experience working with (justice involved youth or at-risk youth, adults) preferred.
Demonstrated experience in small scale sustainable farming and tool/equipment usage.
Experience with teaching and/or group facilitation strongly preferred
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
Proficient in data collection and software use
Proficient in operating: Computer, fax, scanner, printer, copy machine and multi-line phone
Not-for-profit experience preferred

Education

High School Diploma or equivalency required
must possess at a minimum a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Sociology, Criminal Justice, Social Work, or other closely related field, preferably from an accredited college or university

Requirements
Must have a personal vehicle that you are willing to use for work, valid driver’s license and pass agency’s DMV check as well as provide proof of automobile insurance at agency-mandated liability levels.
Clearance on the following tests which will be paid for by San Diego Second Chance:
· Background Fingerprint check
· Drug Test
