Position overview:
The Indirect Tax Accountant is a key member of the Tax Team in Finance. You will manage VAT compliance across the Ball Europe group of companies and be a main point of contact for local plants.
Your responsibility is also to lead and assist with projects to improve compliance or to implement new regulations across Europe, and in the resolution of issues and queries from tax authorities, customers, vendors and the business.
Key responsibilities include:
Prepare and analyse data to enable external consultants to compile and submit monthly and quarterly VAT and associated filings for a number of EU VAT returns, including Poland, Ireland and Slovenia.
Review the returns prepared by the external consultants and approve prior to submission.
Manage the preparation and submission of UK VAT filings for the UK VAT group
Review and approve other European VAT returns and payments for registrations held by the UK Principal company
Control, analyse and understand external advisory costs relating to indirect taxes, including month-end accrual and variance analysis against budget and forecast
Manage month end close procedures for VAT including journals, FX clearing, performance of any applicable SOX controls and running the VAT by Country report
Maintain balance sheet reconciliations of relevant VAT accounts
Prepare forecast and budget VAT balance sheet, cashflow, FX exposures and advisor fees.
Key contact on VAT issues raised by plants and direct liaison with external advisors on such issues requiring technical support/guidance
Assist with VAT audits, or queries from the tax authorities across Europe. Provide assistance in addressing audit recommendations
Assist external customers and suppliers with VAT implications of sales/purchases.
Support VAT requirements arising from structural changes e.g. new plant builds and regulatory changes. This may include applications for new VAT registrations.
Manage and control VAT standing data across Ball registrations in Europe
Manage the process to recover input VAT on travel expenses and purchase cards, working with an external partner
Manage and support other VAT issues and projects, with adhoc tasks as required.
Experience and skills required:
Strong communication skills across all organisational levels and customer service mindset.
ACA/CIMA/ACCA/CTA qualified.
Extensive experience with international VAT and working in international, complex finance.
Application and aptitude for learning, interpreting and applying detailed and complex rules and information.
Problem solving – ability to investigate an issue or opportunity, identify key matters, and then devise and implement effective solutions.
Ability to work in a pressured environment with deadlines and competing demands on time and focus.
Proficient in use of ERP systems and Excel
Fluency in written and spoken English.
