This post is for a Locum Consultant in Ophthalmology. This is a whole time post offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Medic to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in St Helens & Knowsley Teaching Hospitals.

Due to the short term nature of the role and service demand, the successful candidate must hold a current registration with the GMC and hold Right to Work in the UK at the time of application. Candidates who are not GMC registered and do not hold a current Right to Work in the UK will not progress through to the shortlisting stage

Main duties of the job

Maintain the highest clinical standards in the day to day management of the ophthalmology service.

Provision in conjunction with consultant colleagues of an Ophthalmology service to St Helens & Knowsley Hospitals Trust, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of ophthalmic diseases, and the proper functioning of the department. The post-holder will have broad general ophthalmic skills and a special interest in oculoplastic and lacrimal surgery.

The Trust has a clearly defined program of medical audit. The appointee will be expected to participate in clinical audit.

The Trust has a weekly Grand Round held in the Education Centre, every Tuesday lunchtime. All disciplines take part on a rotational basis. The centre has a purpose built lecture theatre, seminar rooms and library.

The Trust has, for decades, been one of the 3 major providers of clinical training for undergraduates from the University of Liverpool and was awarded Teaching Hospital status in 2008.

There is a varied program of lectures and seminars and sub-specialty educational meetings and an excellent medical illustration department.

A £338 million (PFI) investment has re-built and modernised both Whiston and St Helens Hospitals, resulting in modern state of the art health care facilities for the treatment and care of patients. St Helens Hospital was completed in 2008 and Whiston Hospital in 2010. The hospitals include 887 inpatient beds with state of the art CT and MRI facilities existing on both hospital sites. CT and MRI scanners at St Helens have also recently been upgraded including installation of a high field 3 Tesla MRI Scanner. The DEXA scanner is also located at St Helens Hospital.

The Trust provides a full range of acute inpatient, outpatient, day case and emergency services to local communities of St Helens, Knowsley, parts of Halton and Liverpool. The Regional Plastic Surgery and Burns Unit also extend its services to the whole of Cheshire, Merseyside, North Wales and the Isle of Man.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Hospital has a clearly defined programme of medical audit. All specialities spend 1 NHD on audit every 2 months; this occurs at the same time for all specialities allowing an exchange of views between specialities and encourages multi-disciplinary audit. The audit session occurs on a different half day rotating from Tuesday morning to Thursday afternoon. A medical audit information system has been installed.

The appointee is expected to participate in teaching & training of junior staff in Ophthalmology .They are also required to supervise junior medical staff within the specialty. There are opportunities to attend Wednesday pm teaching sessions at either Manchester Royal Eye Hospital or St Pauls Eye Unit at Liverpool.

The Postgraduate Centre has a purpose built lecture theatre, 3 seminar rooms and a library, including electronic databases and internet access. There is a varied programme of lectures and seminars and sub-specialty educational meetings.

The Trust has for decades been one of the three major providers of clinical training for undergraduate medical students from the University of Liverpool.

Experience of & commitment to, teaching undergraduates & postgraduates.
Experience of audit management.
Wide clinical experience in Ophthalmology, with a broad experience of the speciality, minimum of 6 years. Experience of cataract surgery and oculoplastic surgery.
Experience of & commitment to, teaching undergraduates & postgraduates.
Publications in peer-reviewed journals
Desirable criteria
Evidence of the delivery of high quality teaching.
Fellowship training in oculoplastic surgery.
