Job Description : Job overview

We are advertising a a full-time post to join the current consultant workforce who provide Paediatric Nephrology services to the EMEESY network.

The EMEESY Children’s Kidney Network provides specialist nephrology and urology care to children and young people with kidney problems throughout the East Midlands (EM), the East of England (EE) and South Yorkshire (SY), hence EMEESY. Highly specialised care such as dialysis, transplant and renal biopsies are performed in Nottingham to maintain expertise. The ethos of the network, however, is to provide care close to home whenever possible. We have established this by building relationships with the local teams and supporting the local care of patients through shared-care clinics, weekly online nephro-urology X-ray meetings, regular education meetings and easy access for advice from our team based in Nottingham. Our team includes consultants, specialist nurses, pharmacists, social workers and dieticians. We also consider our local paediatricians with specialist expertise in nephrology, link nurses and other health / allied health professionals as part of our team working together to provide the highest quality of care to children and young people with kidney problems in all the hospitals within our network.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have a base in the Nottingham Children’s Hospital based in the Queen’s Medical Centre Campus. The candidate must be registered with the GMC and be on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months of their expected date of CCT on the date of interview.

The role will include specialist clinics in Nottingham, some general nephrology clinics in Nottingham and shared care clinics in two of our regional hospitals.

On-call work is based in Nottingham and is on a 1 in 8 rota at category A receiving a 5% supplement.

The post-holder would be working with a team of 7 other consultant colleagues, junior medical staff and a multi-professional team.

To understand the role in more detail, please read the attached job description and person specification documents.

Working for our organisation

Hospital services for children in Nottingham merged onto a single site at Queen’s Medical Centre and Nottingham Children’s Hospital was created within it. We provide a comprehensive range of specialist services for children in Nottingham, together with tertiary paediatric and neonatal services to the adjacent areas of Lincolnshire, Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire (Trent SHA catchment area), surgical services for Stoke on Trent in the Midlands and neurosurgical services for Leicestershire. We also provide supra-regional services for paediatric spinal surgery, rheumatology, nephro-urology and cystic fibrosis. Paediatric cardiac surgery and hepato-biliary surgery are not resourced locally.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The formal job plan for this post can be seen within the attached Job Description.

The post-holder will have 8 service weeks per year. Service weeks involve around 16 PAs of clinical care providing in-patient services in Nottingham and telephone advice for services across our region.

During service weeks, the on-service consultant will be on-call for the whole weekend. Evening/night-time cover for weeknights is separate from service cover with a brief consultant handover taking place at 5pm.

The post will include 34 weeks that are deemed non-service weeks. This approximates to one CKD clinic, one telephone / video clinic and one additional clinic (General Nephrology, Enuresis or Shared Care clinic) per week. There are a small number of additional specialist clinics e.g. oncology and endocrinology.

Non-fixed commitments include patient administration and Supporting Professional Activity: research, audit, governance, management, teaching and supervision.

The unit is renowned for its team-working ethos and associated with the team are specialist renal nurses, specialist urology nurses, three paediatric renal dietitians, two social workers, a clinical psychologist, a play specialist, youth worker, hospital teaching support and administrative support. We have recently had investment in our multi-professional team to account for the increase in number and complexity of patients. This is therefore an exciting time as we look at how we can work as a team in new ways to improve the quality of care that our patients receive across our network. The post-holder would be expected, as would all members of our team, to contribute to this service development.
