Job Description : About the position
The School of Landscape Architecture, Faculty for Landscape and Society at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) is announcing two 3-year PhD fellowship positions in the topic:
Shaping Post-oil – energy landscapes
The energy crisis of the 2000s, caused in part by the decline in oil reserves and the demand to reduce the use of CO2-emitting energy production, has triggered a renewed debate on what Norway should do with its natural resources. On the one hand, successive governments have promoted the development of alternative energy sources such as wind and solar power; on the other hand, one investigates the expansion of well-known renewable energy sources such as hydropower. All options have strong implications on how the landscape will be changed in various ways.
Norway’s way of meeting the urgent need for a transition to carbon-neutral energy production requires substantial reorientation efforts. Norway’s ‘Post-oil’ scenario also applies to the entire world. Solutions need to be found for technological, social-cultural, and ecological challenges, and seen together. A transdisciplinary approach will challenge the discipline of landscape architecture – and this is one of the important questions – how may landscape architecture respond adequately to the imperative of a truly transdisciplinary approach.
With two PhD fellowships, we wish to investigate past and future landscape approaches departing from any of the following perspectives.
1. Historical perspective
2. Social/cultural perspective
3. Ecological perspective
4. Design – Integration of technology: urban and other landscapes
A detailed elaboration of each perspective can be found in the deliberation document.
Applicants are asked to send in a short project proposal (max. 2 pages) with the application. In its review of the incoming applications the School of Landscape Architecture will look for projects with potential for collaboration between candidates.
The faculty is about to establish a new Research School on the green shift and energy transition which may provide a productive learning environment for prospective candidates.
