Seeking a Research Assistant with expertise in using cellular and rodent models to be part of a research team investigating treatments for neurodegenerative diseases.
THE ROLE
Salary Package: From $75,400 to $85,728 per annum (HEW level 5) plus annual leave loading and 17% superannuation
Appointment Type: Full time, Fixed term for 12 months

The Role
We are seeking a motivated and talented Research Assistant with a background in cellular models of neurodegenerative diseases such as motor neuron disease (MND) to join the Centre for Motor Neuron Disease at Macquarie University. The role will provide support to projects examining the cellular mechanisms and molecular pathways of neurodegeneration in MND and assessing novel treatment strategies in cell and mouse models.

You will be a motivated and organised researcher who takes initiative when completing research project tasks and demonstrates attention to detail and quality in your work. You enjoy working with animal models and performing laboratory protocols with precision and attention to detail. You enjoy working both independently and as part of a team. You are also skilled in performing data analysis and are competent in using MS Office, data management and statistical analysis packages.

To be considered for this position, please apply online by submitting your cv and a separate (2-page maximum) cover letter that demonstrates how you meet the following selection criteria:
Essential
Recent honours or masters degree in science, medical science or related discipline.
Experience working with cellular models, including cell culture, transfection, immunocytochemistry and immunoblot analysis.
Demonstrated experience in confocal microscopy and image analysis.
Familiar with MND pathology and/or knowledge with neurodegenerative disease.
Exceptional organisational and time management skills and ability to work with a variety of projects at the same time.
Experience with mouse brain histology, such as tissue processing, sectioning, immunohistochemistry and knowledge in mouse brain neuroanatomy would be desirable.
Experience with cellular treatment studies would be beneficial.
Knowledge in autophagy pathways and/or mitochondria biology (desirable).
Demonstrated success contributing independently and within a team to research, preferably in a PC2 or QC2 laboratory
Knowledge of and demonstrated understanding of neuroanatomy is preferred
This position requires you to comply with occupational screening, assessment and vaccinations in line with Macquarie University requirements.
