The Analytical Technology organization is well on its way transforming from a service organization to true technology delivery partner for our main (Shell) customers in the past few years. The Researcher in the India Molecular spectroscopy (Mol Spec) team is expected to play an important role in developing and deploying a broad range of technological advancements in Spectroscopy, mainly in Optical Spectroscopy and molecular imaging including but not limited to Ultraviolet-visible, vibrational techniques such as Infra-red, Raman, Near Infra-red(NIR), Raman imaging etc. to enable reliable measurements in the liquid and solid phases for applications ranging from downstream, upstream, integrated gas as well as R&D programs in P&T.
What’s the role
As Researcher in the Mol Spec and Process Monitoring team, you will be a technical expert in the global team who will be responsible for providing advanced technical solutions in optical measurement sciences. The incumbent will ensure that innovative solutions are implemented to provide reliable, fast and cost-effective analytical measurements leveraging a variety of optical techniques and other techniques in combination with modern digital approaches, e.g. with chemometrics and image processing, develop and implement methods for rapid analysis of spectral data for materials and processes of Shell’s interest.
Your further responsibilities include:
Provide technical expertise for the development, deployment and improvement of cutting-edge advanced spectroscopy solutions utilizing Optical Spectroscopy and molecular imaging including but not limited to ultraviolet-visible, vibrational techniques such as Infra-red(IR), Raman, near IR (NIR), Raman imaging, etc. for applications to materials and processes of Shell’s interest.
Technical responsibility for method development, gate keeping, evaluation, and implementation of new capability, including obtaining molecular fingerprints of liquids and solid samples, identifying molecular components in complex mixes.
Develop and deploy IR and Raman vibrational spectroscopy and vibrational mapping of surfaces protocols in conjunction with other imaging techniques to obtain a comprehensive understanding of materials.
Collaborate and leverage other skill area, such as NMR, SEM, TEM, XRF, MS, GC/LC to provide end to end solution to customers.
Manage multi-disciplinary global projects to ensure customers technical needs are met in timely and cost-effective manner.
Collaborate with local and global Analytical colleagues on complex multi-disciplinary problem- solving projects, and new project and R&D initiation and implementation.
Closely interact with internal customers, with high level of stake-holder engagement, identifying applications and contributing to business by own expertise including but not limited to contributing to R&D projects and understanding value to the business.
Design, develop, purchase, validate, deploy and maintain various complex spectroscopic and other analytical instruments and methods as well as day-to-day hands-on work in the laboratory as well as supervision of laboratory staff performing testing, while paying close attention to safety and quality.
Monitor analytical technology developments outside of Shell and identify innovations with the potential to create value for Shell and collaborate in the Global Skill Network.
Mentor, train and guide less experienced staff in Spectroscopic skill space as well as actively participate in Global Skill Network.
What we need from you
We are keen to hear from scientists or engineers with at least 10 years’ experience and knowledge of spectroscopy with substantial experience in molecular spectroscopy and materials and their potential applications.
Beyond that, we’d hope to see the following qualities and experience:
PhD or master’s degree in Analytical Chemistry with relevant academic or industry experience is required.
Expertise and hands-on experience in setting up various spectroscopy hardware including lasers, spectrometers, optical configurations, and combined systems.
Data analysis methods such as chemometrics.
Experience in Analytical project and R&D development and deployment is required, including experience in supporting large-scale R&D projects working across organizations.
A high technical curiosity, learner mindset and ability to work across natural teams without organizational authority is essential for the job.
Demonstrated ability for problem solving and crafting novel solutions
Strong interpersonal skills that can easily transport deep technical discussions to business impact is highly valued.
