We have an opportunity for a dynamic and enthusiastic Band 6 Occupational Therapist to join the musculoskeletal rotation at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust on a permanent basis.
The areas of the rotation are:-
Burns & Plastics Service – including Sarcoma
Elective Orthopaedics
In Patient Trauma Orthopaedics
Out Patient Trauma & Orthopaedic Service
Treatment Center

Dependent on the rotation you are placed on, you could be required to:
Work as part of multidisciplinary teams in both in and outpatient settings
Assess and treat patients to facilitate discharge and to support rehabilitation
Provide supervision to more junior staff (including Band 5, support and student members of staff)
Deputise for the Band 7 team leader as appropriate
Work flexibly – including working rostered weekends
Fitting and fabricating splints and braces

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
If you are interested in developing your skills in complex discharge planning, splinting and
bracing, scar management, work hardening, and psycho-social readjustment following injury or surgery, then this could be the rotation for you. Although we see predominantly
musculoskeletal diagnoses, prior experience with healthcare of the elderly, oncology,
haematology, renal, amputees and mental health will be invaluable.
The successful applicant will demonstrate excellent core OT skills and a willingness to learn
and develop further, both clinically and professionally. You will be working as part of
multidisciplinary teams who will give support and training for you to develop in this role to reach your full potential. You will demonstrate an ability to work autonomously and provide support to less experienced members of the team, including students and support workers. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to work flexibly to support the needs of the service. This may include working evenings to cover outpatient clinics, as well as involvement with weekend working.
Any prior experience you have of fitting and fabricating splints is valuable, but not essential, as full training will be provided as necessary. We are motivated and promote further learning and development and are privileged to have the support of an advanced practitioner, who works across site to support with this. We also support members of the team to attend relevant external courses and conferences. At NUH we have a band 6 development programme which supports staff to grow in their role, improve project and presentation skills and develop as an occupational therapist for the future.
You will be given support and training for you to develop in the band 6 role, but you must
demonstrate leadership skills and the ability to work autonomously, deputising for the Band 7 when required. You will also provide support and supervision to your more junior team members, and engage in student training.

Essential criteria
Diploma or degree in Occupational Therapy
Health Professional Council registration as an Occupational Therapist
Able to maintain a professional portfolio for CPD, recording learning outcomes through participation in internal and external development opportunities
Experience

Experience of delegating to and supervising OT or Rehabilitation support staff
Experience of contributing to the clinical education of less experienced staff or undergraduate OT students
Knowledge of national and local standards and COT guidelines
Experience of contributing to service development
Experience of using evidence based practice in own practice
Experience of involvement in change management
Experience of being an appraisee and appraisor, using personal development review
Experience of delegation and contributing to the operational management of the team
Communication skills

Able to discuss treatment options and recommend best course of intervention to patients and carers using negotiating, persuasive, motivational and reassurance skills
Able to effectively use a range of written and verbal communication skills with patients to progress rehabilitation and treatment programmes. This will include patients who may have difficulties in understanding or communicating eg. Patients may be dysphasic, deaf, who may be unable to accept diagnosis or have terminal illness
Able to communicate patient related information effectively to ensure collaborative working with MDT colleagues across health & social care sectors.
Able to maintain accurate and comprehensive patient treatment records in line with Trust standards, departmental standards and COT Standards of Practice
