Job Description : Job-Specific Responsibilities
The Research Computing group in the Harvard Medical School Department of Information Technology is seeking a talented Devops Engineer with knowledge of, and preferably certification in Amazon Web Services (AWS), focusing on managing environments that must meet federal security standards. The Devops Engineer will be responsible for supporting the HMS IT Secure Research Computing Environment (SRCE), a FISMA certified AWS cloud infrastructure environment, enabling the groundbreaking biomedical research of some of the world’s foremost scientific investigators.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Support operational activities of the SRCE – deployment, monitoring, reporting, patching, and compliance, in partnership with HMS architecture, devops and research computing teams
Utilize best-practice cloud security designs as directed to ensure the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the secure environment
Utilize a continuous integration and deployment methodology for AWS based technologies
Support full application stacks from the OS through custom research applications using AWS
Provide high-level support on technical computing issues to end users and developers
Document complex technology, data protection, confidentiality, and data residency solutions
Play a supporting role in the planning, implementation and growth of the SRCE
Drive continuous improvement of the SRCE through process, architecture, and cost-saving refinements

Basic Qualifications
Minimum of two years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience
Additional Qualifications and Skills
Minimum two years’ additional post-secondary education or relevant work experience
Knowledge of information technology applications, processes, software and equipment
Demonstrated team performance skills, service mindset approach, and the ability to act as a trusted advisor
2+ years of combined cloud engineering experience with Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and/or Google Cloud
A Bachelor’s degree or 4+ years of IT consulting experience as a technologist in Customer-facing roles
Familiarity of at least one programming or scripting language
Critical to this position is the ability to work independently and to make decisions at the appropriate time, taking into account the needs of the situation, priorities, constraints and the availability of necessary information all in support of the core research computing mission.
A strong conceptual and practical understanding of cloud security controls, principles and best practices
Knowledge of or experience in healthcare systems and authorities operations, such as FISMA, FedRAMP or HIPPA-regulated environment architecture/designs
Experience with AWS technologies which may include IAM, EC2, EBS, ELB, RDS, RedShift, S3, Glacier, Route 53, Gateways, VPCs, CloudWatch, Lambda scripts, CloudFormation, VDI, Appstream 2.0, Control Tower, Service Catalog
AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate is a plus
Experience supporting large-scale enterprise IT cloud projects
Hands-on experience with distributed resource management and virtualization technologies
Experience with the following technologies is a plus:
Puppet / Foreman / Terraform / Jenkins
Containerization technologies: Docker, Singularity, Kubernetes, Amazon ECS
Open-source databases: MySQL/Mariadb, Postgres
Scripting languages, such as Bash and Python
GitHub and git workflows
AWS Service Work Bench
Qualys, Checkmarx
Splunk
Additional Information
This Staff role may start as a remote position due to the COVID-19 pandemic and while restrictions are still in place. The current remote nature of this role is considered temporary and may change as the University continues to evaluate options. While we continue to monitor the evolving COVID-19 guidelines, local on-campus work may be expected for some roles. Harvard Medical School does support flexible schedules, subject to individual departments’ business needs. All remote work must be performed within a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA (exempt roles only), CT, MA, MD, ME, NH, NY, RI, and VT).
