We seek a Head of Software Development to take a hands-on lead role in building the software and systems for our platforms and their associated products and services. The role will ideally be based in one of PxD’s countries of operation but could be located anywhere with a sufficient overlap in the working day.

Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

In this role, you will lead the technical design of solutions. You will lead and work with a software engineering team to plan and develop those solution designs. You will also help the team and PxD to build and scale our platform onto the global stage building, using and integrating best-of-breed technologies.

You will do this by:

Mentoring and recruiting and supporting great team members
Working with our technology partners to maximise our impact
Building new relationships and partners in the technological ecosystem to the benefit of PxD and our products/services
Working with our Research, Data Engineering, Product Development and Program Management teams to bring designs and operations to life through our platforms
Working with country teams, professional groups, and the new programmes team to help develop proposals
Participating in the early-stage design and development of new platform features and various special projects as appropriate
Supporting ideation and experimentation of various PxD services to maximise user adoption
Refining the technical architecture to support our organisation and product strategy and our technology objectives
Managing the software development backlog and agreeing epic/feature/task prioritisation with the team and the organisation
Ensuring and maintaining the relevance of our tooling and frameworks
Leading the planning and being hands-on – actively developing, participating in code reviews, PRs, conducting technical research, etc.
With the software engineering team, managing platform availability and managing support requests
We need someone who has (or can quickly develop) the following skills:

Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate, influence and generate confidence, trust, and respect
Keen to learn and maintain flexibility of approach

Some technical skills and/or experience leading teams with:

Best practice development processes, security, tooling for code, CI/CD, monitoring, etc., to maximise the team’s performance and production-ready platforms. Tell us what you think are the best ways of working
We use Erlang, R/Shiny, Python, but experience with any of C#, Java, JavaScript/Typescript, Go, Elixir, Haskell or similar are also of interest – what are your favourites – what’s your opinion on functional programming?
Some Messaging (e.g., SNS, FCM, Service Bus, etc.) and Data Storage paradigms (e.g., PostgreSQL, Amazon RDS, MongoDB, Redis, etc.) and Data Engineering fundamentals (ETL, Encryption, Scaling, Analytics, etc.) – what have you worked with and what do you want to learn next
Any micro-frontends, micro-services, containerisation and orchestration paradigms and related technologies – bring your experience and get some more
UI (web or mobile), HTML/CSS, Web Components, Mobile Native – maybe you think technologies such as Capacitor or Flutter are better
Provisioning on cloud providers such as AWS, Azure and using their services such as Application/API gateways, Load Balancers, CDN, AKS/EKS, Key Vaults, SSO, etc.

We think that people with a variety of industry backgrounds could be a good fit for this role. People with strong software engineering/development knowledge are especially good candidates. Ideally a technical lead or development manager already who is seeking to move up to own more of the stack. Qualifications and experience in the following domains would also be useful:

Computer Applications, Science or Engineering related discipline.
Data platforms, CMS, SaaS, Telecoms or other platform-related domains.
