At Nottingham University Hospitals we are ever improving and expanding our services and are currently looking for experienced and motivated midwives wishing to develop their skill set to join the team. We have an exciting opportunity for the right candidates to develop their midwifery skills in the specialist area of diabetes in pregnancy.

Currently, around 10% of women who give birth at NUH have some form of diabetes and are cared for by the diabetes in pregnancy service. Working alongside dietitians you would run clinics for women with gestational diabetes to provide high quality midwifery care and support them with their blood sugar control in pregnancy. You would also work as part of a multidisciplinary team caring for women with pre-existing diabetes or complex gestational diabetes in the weekly antenatal diabetes clinics.

As a specialised member of the midwifery team, you would become a source of support and knowledge for the wider midwifery team, providing training and advice when required and assisting in reviewing pregnant women on the wards.

The role requires working across both Queens’s Medical Centre and City Hospital campuses, on a Monday to Friday day-shift basis with both full and part time hours considered.

The successful candidate will be running clinics for women diagnosed with gestational diabetes alongside our dietitian colleagues. This includes an initial appointment where you would educate women about the condition and the extra care that will be offered during pregnancy as well as teaching them how to monitor their blood sugars. You would also run follow up clinics with the dietitians to support women with managing their blood sugars during the remainder of their pregnancy and initiate starting treatment if required

The role also involves working as part of the multidisciplinary team in the weekly clinics for women with pre-existing diabetes or complex gestational diabetes; providing specialist midwifery input for these mothers

As a specialised member of the midwifery team, you would become a source of support and knowledge for the wider midwifery team, providing training and advice when required and assisting in reviewing pregnant women on the wards

As we are an expanding service, there will also be the opportunity to assist and lead on service development projects; to ensure we continue to evolve to meet the needs of women, families and the wider service

The successful candidate would be fully supported to develop their midwifery skills in this specialized area and complete a full induction upon joining the team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To assist the Lead Midwife for Diabetes in:
Maintaining specialist midwifery care for a caseload of patients requiring specialist care by providing care to women with diabetes in specialist diabetes antenatal clinics.
Providing specialist training to the wider maternity team as required. This may be participating in running formal training sessions, or may be less formal training to staff on duty
Maintaining and developing a quality service. As our service is expanding, this is an exciting opportunity to join and be able to support or lead mini quality improvement projects to help continue developing our service
Excellent communication skills are essential for this role as you will sometimes be communicating complex information with women, their families and the wider multidisciplinary team.
Participate in clinical audit/trials and collection of data for improving women’s care as appropriate e.g. patient satisfaction surveys, NPID audits.
