The Geospatial Lab is the centre for spatial research, consulting and capacity building activities at IIHS. It cuts across programmes and teams integrating spatial technology and methods such as GIS, remote sensing, spatial modeling and web services into practice and consulting services as well as inter-disciplinary research. Its location in the IIHS ecosystem makes the Lab uniquely placed to offer customised project design and delivery, on the one hand, and institutional support, capacity building, training and teaching to a diverse range of learners on the other. As it grows, the Lab plans to become a national hub for geo-spatial sciences and technology that combines technological innovation and process expertise with inter-disciplinary knowledge generation.

Job Description

IIHS is looking to hire a Research Assistant/ Associate to work on the India Flood Monitoring and Impact Assessment Portal (IFMIAP) project within the Geospatial Lab.

This is a contractual position for an initial term of 11 months, renewable on mutual consent.

Activities and Tasks

Responsibilities would include, but not be limited to, the following:

Developing methods and automated workflows for near real time crop mapping using time series remote sensing data for India;
Collecting available meteorological data and building national scale inventory of floods for the last 6 years;
Supporting IFMIAP project management and the day-to-day operations of the lab;
Contributing to ongoing research, practice and capacity building projects;
Publishing in high quality scientific journals and disseminating results on other platforms;
Demonstrating an ability to engage with and across multiple disciplines central to the IIHS;
Providing support to other IIHS activities including academics, research, training, practice, operations and others;
Participating in all activities of Institution-Building at IIHS; carrying out tasks as assigned by IIHS, and traveling on IIHS work within or outside the country as and when needed.

Structure and Reporting
The Research Assistant/ Associate will be an External Consultant coordinating with the Consultant – Practice at IIHS and will be required to collaborate effectively with a diverse group of internal teams and external individuals/organisations, and students.

Person Specification

Applicants for this role should have:

A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Geoinformatics/ Remote Sensing or related disciplines, or a degree in Computer Science, with a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience;
Experience in using one or more open-source geospatial applications (eg: QGIS);
Proficiency in at least one programming language (preferably Python) and related spatial libraries;
Experience in agricultural remote sensing, for e.g., crop classification using Sentinel-1 & 2 and Landsat datasets;
Expertise in advanced statistical analysis/ geostatistics using R, Python or other languages is desirable;
Knowledge of image processing tasks such as image segmentation and morphological image processing will be an added advantage;
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work in highly interdisciplinary teams;
Strong written and oral communication skills;
Openness to working flexible hours from time to time as needed.

This is a contractual position for an initial term of 11 months, renewable on mutual consent. This offer is on an exclusive basis, which implies that other professional assignments (whether compensated or not) that bear a potential conflict of interest with IIHS cannot be undertaken.

The search will remain open until the position is filled.

Location

This position is based in Bengaluru and may entail travel to other locations in India.
