At the NHS, we are reminded every day of how important life is. As a flexible working friendly organisation, we want to be sure that you can work in a way that is best for us and for our patients, and for you. Speak to us about how we might be able to accommodate a flexible working arrangement whether that’s job share, part time or another flexible pattern. In addition, although the role advertised may have a ‘home’ office base indicated, we remain committed to supporting flexibility around workplace locations. If it works for the service, we will do our best to make it work for you.
Would you like to work in Cornwall?
Cornwall Health for Homeless is pleased to be able to offer a rare and unique opportunity to work flexibly, creatively and rewardingly with some of the most disadvantaged individuals in our county.
At present we are looking for either a GP or Advanced Clinical Practitioner to fill a vacancy in our small team of 1.5 wte GPs and a full-time specialist nurse.
This is a substantive, salaried position with the potential to adapt regular hours to suit the individual applicant – varying from one to four days a week. There is no requirement to work in the evenings, at weekends or on Bank Holidays. Pay is in the range from X to X with extra income available to those willing to take on additional responsibilities within the team, such as service development.
We are an Emis based practic1.5e, with approximately 250 registered patients distributed across Cornwall. All our patients are either street homeless or unstably housed. We currently offer both drop-in and booked appointments at each of our three clinic sites in Truro, Pool and Penzance. As might be expected, home visits are rarely needed.
The complexity of patient need is high, both in terms of physical and psychological morbidity. Skill is also necessary in the management of long-term addictions (for which training is available if required). Successful practitioners require excellent interpersonal skills to establish good patient rapport, as well as a keen interest in pursuing a tolerant, empathic and holistic approach. Multidisciplinary working with a broad range of other organisations is essential.
Health for Homeless is very unusual in being block-funded and therefore not required to claim for capitation, QOF or other payments. We have our own small, admin team supported by a part-time office manager. In addition, we have more extensive backing from Cornwall Partnership Foundation Trust, which includes the assistance of a specific mental health team dedicated to the needs of the homeless population.
For those who may be thinking of applying from outside the county, it goes without saying that Cornwall is in an extremely privileged position to offer a superb range of recreational activities to support a healthy work-life balance – from sailing and surfing to rugged coastal walks and a thriving theatre and arts scene.
If you are thinking of applying, or want to discuss the role in more detail, please feel free to contact the current team lead Dr Kerry Bailey at kerry.bailey@nhs.net, cpn-tr.homeless-admin@nhs.net or via our office on 01872 273617.
Observational sessions sitting in with one of the members of the team can be arranged by contacting michelle.mcternan@nhs.net.
To achieve our Trust objectives, we prioritise the development of our staff. To support this, the following opportunities are available:
Protected CPD time for registered staff
Access to a dedicated central development fund supporting CPD for all staff
Leadership and Management development programmes
Coaching and mentoring opportunities
A full clinical induction programme for operational skills
Access to a care certificate programme for our band 1-4 clinical staff
A bespoke and robust preceptorship programme to support newly qualified staff
Individual professional development programmes
Being part of a successful NHS Foundation Trust brings a portfolio of rewards and benefits for our staff. These include:
Free access to individual HARP portfolios to support revalidation for nursing staff
Free DBS checks where required
Discounts available from retailers, UK hotels and main attractions
NHS Pension Scheme
Salary sacrifice car scheme
Cycle to work scheme
The Trust reimburses all application costs for staff eligible to apply for EU settlement status.
The Trust reserves the right to close this advert once a sufficient number of applications have been submitted. It is encouraged that you complete the application at your earliest convenience to avoid disappointment.
If you are successful at the shortlisting stage of the recruitment process you will be contacted via TRAC.jobs email regarding interview details.
We are committed to diversity and equality of employment including the employment of current and former service users.

Appointments are subject to full three year satisfactory references therefore please ensure you include correct contact details for your nominated referees including email addresses.
The successful applicant will be an NHS employee and may therefore have contact with vulnerable service users. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been necessary to take significant steps to protect the health and safety of our staff, service users and those attending our sites. In order to comply with our duty of care, we require our staff to have the COVID vaccine and we will ask for proof of vaccination during the recruitment process. Vaccination will be a condition of employment unless an exemption applies.
