What does the team do?

Ocado is revolutionising the online grocery business through its next generation Customer Fulfilment Centres, now being sold internationally as part of the Ocado Smart Platform. Building this cutting edge technology is only possible through extensive simulation, which drives decisions around warehouse design, business planning and control algorithms. On a given day we might simulate months of warehouse operation and years of supply chain.

This role sits within Ocado’s Control Systems Simulation Tooling team, which builds and supports the distributed platform (Gandalf) that configures, executes and analyses these large suites of Simulation models. The team currently comprises five developers, and is looking to grow in order to improve and scale our systems to match the increasing demand for simulation data.

What would I be doing?

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Software Engineer, skilled in Python, who will join the team to work on the Full Stack development of this complex distributed system. As a senior member of the team, you would assist steering the tooling architecture, technologies and processes on its new platform, as well as contributing good quality code.

As part of Ocado’s Research and Development Group, the simulation team contributes to the innovation that fuels Ocado’s growth. We are looking for candidates who are comfortable with taking on a number of different roles…

as an Inventor: Being part of the creative process that drives new concepts and innovations.
as a Developer: Creating novel solutions to user requested enhancements.
as an Architect: Contribute to the ongoing Gandalf architectural discussions and decision making process.
as a Designer: Developing new GUI’s (wizards) for existing and new user interface challenges
as a Mentor: Providing mentoring and supporting the development of junior team members while championing collaboration across the whole team and broader Simulation area.

About the technology…

The core of our current development is the following:

Python (Django, now deprecating) web server containing most of the business logic, but currently migrating/re-architecting this to become a suite of Restful Web Services on OTP.
React based front-end built on a GraphQL API.
Docker builds for the server, workers, and individual simulation tasks.

What we are looking for:

You will have:

A BSc or similar in Computer Science, or a numerate degree.
Experience developing large scale systems in both Python (2 & 3).
Good demonstrable understanding of microservices and their design patterns (AWS).
Experience in the design of complex distributed Web systems.
Strong analytical and debugging skills.
Experience designing writing, deploying and maintaining software in a professional environment also an interest in Test Driven Development (TDD) and Domain Driven Design (DDD).
A collaborative approach that is comfortable with ambiguity and uncertainty in project specification.

This would make you stand out from the crowd:

Object Oriented Programming Experience.
RESTful API Development, experience of Message Queues.
Experience with Kanban, Scrum or other Agile methodologies.
Experience with Javascript ES6, React, GraphQL API.
Knowledge of GitLab/GitLab CI.
Cloud Services (e.g. AWS, GCE).
Knowledge of DevOps tooling (e.g. Kubernetes, Docker).
Knowledge of Simulations.
Understanding of UX.
