Job Description : Program Overview
According to Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Indonesia emitted approximately 800 million-1,1 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (Mt CO2eq) emissions due to immense forests and land fires in 2015. These fires were caused by extensive peat soil drainage and excessive peat conversion to other land uses, mainly palm oil plantations. Peatland in Indonesia is a unique ecosystem with high biodiversity and economic value. Peatland has various functions, including hydrological or water storage and management, carbon storage functions related to climate change mitigation, and biodiversity conservation. However, peatland is vulnerable to degradation, subsidence, and fire, particularly when peatland is being drained. For example, the Indonesian National Determined Contribution (NDC) document shows that a significant part of Indonesia’s greenhouse gas emissions comes from land use and land cover change (LULCC) and peat fires. Massive forest and peat fires in 2015 contribute to the country and public loss of approximately IDR 221 trillion.
In response to the devastating forest and land fires of 2015, President Joko Widodo established the Peat Restoration Agency (BRG) through Presidential Regulation No. 1/2016 to coordinate and accelerate the recovery of peatlands by restoring 2 million hectares of it by 2020. This work entails, for example, mapping fire-prone provinces, raising peatland water tables, revegetating degraded peatland, creating alternative livelihoods for local communities, and investigating alternative crops for peatland.
The initiative to establish an independent monitoring platform for peatland restoration stems from shared concerns about government performance and the fulfillment of government pledges or commitments related to the restoration of peatland ecosystems. Restoration activities should also involve civil society and the private sector. Therefore, it is necessary to have an inclusive and accountable joint platform whereby the public can monitor the government’s performance and where the parties can work together in restoring peatlands.
WRI Indonesia participates in an independent monitoring initiative called Pantau Gambut (PG), an online platform that provides knowledge and learning about peatland to enable meaningful public participation in peatland restoration. The platform’s objective is to monitor the restoration commitments from both public and private sectors in achieving the restoration targets. This platform provides the factual portray of peatland restoration and protection programs in Indonesia, which visualize several key themes such as forest fire on peat, restoration infrastructures, and the moratorium’s implementation on peatland opening. In doing so, online communications through social media channels play a critical role in translating Pantau Gambut’s findings/research in a format understood by laymen.
General Internship Roles
WRI Indonesia is seeking an intern who will support the communications team on daily basis. The intern will support communications activities, including managing multiple communications channels such as website, social media, online, and offline events. The intern will work closely with the Communications team and collaborate with staff across WRI Indonesia and global office. The intern will also have the opportunity to work with other WRI Indonesia programs in cross-cutting issues during the internship period.

This internship is remotely based, with opportunity to work from WRI Indonesia Jakarta office if possible.
Learning Outcomes
Communications. Learning experience and exposure to various communications activities for sustainable environment topics especially on peatland restoration, forestry aspect, and other topics in relate to tackling climate issue. Intern will be actively involved on:
The development, ideas exploration, and to manage creative brief from the Pantau Gambut’s editorial plan for social media channels including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube
Administer Pantau Gambut’s social media platform
Close coordination with Illustrators to develop Pantau Gambut’s social media channels by giving inspiring and creative ideas for an engaging content.
Project Coordination. Exposure to team dynamic through a brainstorming session to explore new and innovative digital media growth strategy including its implementation and success rate evaluation, engagement opportunity with various stakeholder, and event management (both online and offline) including hands-on experience in preparing and developing its communications material
Project Management. Knowledge on project management from planning, implementation, monitoring, analysis, up to develop a report and summarizing a lesson-learned for improvement.
Qualifications
Senior undergraduate student or freshly graduated student from respectable universities in Indonesia or overseas (preferably from Marketing/Communications, Journalism, Advertising, Public Relation, and other related fields)
Familiarity and experience with social media and other online platform
Previous internship experience in communication is a plus
Excellent communications and interpersonal skills
Strong writing skills both in Bahasa Indonesian and English, including copywriting, editing, and proofing with a strong attention to detail
Computer literate (Microsoft Office, etc.)
Ability in using photo and video editing tools is a plus
Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and communication skills
Agile and able to adapt quickly, flexible, high initiative, creative, and likes to innovate
Demonstrated ability to work both independently as well as part of a team, calmly, efficiently, and enthusiastically in a tight deadline
Ability to think critically and creatively, highly responsible and self-motivated
Internship Terms and Duration
This is a paid internship program for an initial contract up to 31 March 2022 with possibilities of extension subject to project plan and performance evaluation
