We are seeking a motivated and ambitious senior nurse, who strives for excellence, has a passion within the delivery of patient care, monitoring and maintaining high standards within the clinical setting.

The successful candidate will need to illustrate self-development, equally a desire to empower others with development as this is an expectation of this senior role.

As a senior nurse you will be expected to demonstrate the understanding of management requirements in sickness absence, recruitment, retention and various other HR related issues.

The successful applicant will rotate between Ward 5C HASU and Ward 5D Acute Stroke Unit.

It is expected that the successful candidate will have extensive experience in an acute stroke or medical area.

Evidence required of:

Assisting with ward management

Use of extended role

This post will be subject to an Enhanced DBS (with barred list for vulnerable adult’s and children’s disclosure).

Main duties of the job

The post holder is designated to take charge regularly of a ward in the absence of the Ward Manager. He/she will be expected to lead a team of staff at Band 5 and below and set and maintain delivery of quality care. An awareness of the Clinical Governance Agenda is essential.

He/she will have responsibility for the development implementation and evaluation of care plans and will ensure optimal standards of care by acting as a role model.

The post holder will be expected to take the lead for the training and development of all staff on the ward with support from the ward manager.

Working for our organisation

Whiston Hospital has one of the North West Hyper Acute Stroke Units (HASU, Ward 5C) it is situated alongside the Acute Stroke Ward (Ward 5D) to support the stroke patient’s rehabilitation programme. HASU is a 32 bedded unit which includes some step down beds and the Acute Stroke Ward is 27 beds and provides acute stroke rehabilitation for patients transferring from HASU.

St Helens & Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (STHK) provides clinical support to patients with cancers of the Upper GI tract. The team are responsible for both outpatient and inpatient care of patients and the Nurse Specialist service provides care across all areas of Upper GI cancer from first consultation and throughout treatment and follow up.

St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is the only acute Trust in Cheshire and Merseyside, and one of the few in the entire country, to achieve the title of OUTSTANDING, rated by the Care Quality Commission.

We provide a full range of acute adult services to our local population of circa 360,000 and provide tertiary services across a much wider area in the North West, North Wales and Isle of Man. We are a Major Trauma Unit and the Mersey Regional Burns Unit.

CLINICAL & PROFESSIONAL
Ensure individualised care plans are in place for all patients in the designated clinical area.

Work within and monitor standards of care within the defined policies, procedures, standards and protocols of the ward and directorate to ensure adherence to and delivery of a high quality service.

To ensure privacy and dignity of patients is paramount and not compromised. Regular audit of adherence to ward privacy and dignity guidelines.

Ensure effective communication processes are in place to meet the needs of patients, relatives and other members of the multidisciplinary team.

Responsible for setting an agreed standard of patient care and ensuring its delivery, monitored by audit.

Sets a high standard of record keeping regarding patient care which is comprehensive, concise, valid and audited on a regular basis.

Responsible for implementing strategies which enable quality targets to be met utilising recognised audit tools.

Provide clinical and professional advice to members of the nursing team.

Practice at all times within the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Practice.

To attend Trust Statutory and Mandatory training as required and any other training courses relevant to the post.

To present an appearance which gives a positive image of the Trust and a manner which is appropriate and inspires confidence?

To ensure fulfilment of the requirements for professional updating and maintain a personal record for future registration purposes.

ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES
To comply with Trust standards and policies for record keeping

TEACHING & TRAINING
Support the Trust Clinical Governance Agenda by understanding and facilitating priorities for change ensuring that new developments embrace governance objectives.

Participate in research and clinical audit programmes in order to foster innovative practice and contribute to the development of services and quality initiatives in conjunction with the Ward Manager.

Act as a Mentor and support staff through preceptorship and clinical supervision

Support strategies to reduce clinical risk, i.e. Hand hygiene, medical devices, protection of vulnerable adults.

To create a climate conducive to learning for all staff and students alike and maintain established links with the University of Health Care.

To participate in the annual appraisal of Band 5 staff and below in order to implement professional and organisational targets, review performance and identify training and development needs via personal development plans.

LINE MANAGEMENT/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
To deputise for the Ward Manger as requested

Responsible for the management of daily operational responsibilities in the absence of the ward manager including work allocation, deployment and supervision of staff to ensure the smooth running of the ward.

Effectively and efficiently contribute to the management and forward planning of nursing resources to ensure that appropriate skill mix is maintained at all times.

Lead, support, counsel and appraise grades of staff at Band 5 and below within the nursing team to ensure development needs are identified and a cohesive multi-disciplinary approach is maintained.

Sets the standard required for the safe keeping of patients property and valuables.

Ensure that equipment is maintained in safe working order and stock managed within the available financial resource.

Resolve complaints/issues timely and effectively at local level. Investigate and action plan formal complaints in conjunction with the Ward Manager.

To monitor Sickness and Absence at ward level and work closely with the Ward Manager to ensure employees comply with policies/procedures relating to this.

To identify options for cost improvements and support and monitor their implementation.

To participate with the Ward Manager / Matron in the recruitment, orientation, development and retention of all staff required.

FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
