Job Description : ST ANTHONY’S SCHOOL, HAMPSTEAD
Key Stage 2/3 Class Teacher
Responsible to both Deputy Heads (Academic and Pastoral)
The School
St Anthony’s is a Catholic preparatory school (IAPS) for boys aged 4 – 13 with just under 300 pupils on roll.
The school operates a two-form entry with approximately 20 boys in each class from Reception up to and including Year 6. About half the year group leave St Anthony’s to join Year 7 senior schools including UCS, City of London and Highgate. The remaining pupils stay on to prepare for Common Entrance at the end of Year 8 before proceeding to leading independent schools such as MTS, Habs, City of London, St Paul’s and Westminster. Senior school outcomes for 2022 have been outstanding.
The school is not super-selective and promotes a caring, nurturing environment focusing on the holistic education of each child. We speak of St Anthony’s as a greenhouse rather than a hothouse. Pastoral and academic expectations are high amongst parents and staff. The school adds significant value to pupils’ learning and there is great emphasis on regular communication between boys, staff and pupils. A Faculty system and revised assessment schedule was introduced in September 2021. The school takes the professional development of colleagues seriously through regular CPD sessions led internally as well as external agencies.
St Anthony’s achieved ‘Excellent’ in all categories of the ISI full-school inspection in November 2019 – the school is now pursuing an ambitious development plan incorporating digital literacy with outstanding academic, pastoral and co-curricular provision.
St Anthony’s is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
The post
St Anthony’s is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and well-qualified Class Teacher who will be responsible for the academic and pastoral development of boys in Year 4, Year 5 or Year 6. This post has arisen because of the appointment of the incumbent to a leading prep school south of the river.
The person appointed will be an engaging classroom practitioner committed to the learning and progress of boys. They will have very high professional standards, be an excellent verbal and written communicator, and deliver lessons using a range of resources that help foster a love of learning. The successful candidate will articulate a clear vision for education combining traditional and contemporary methods of teaching and will offer ideas for integrating digital literacy into the curriculum. The ability to teach KS3 material or to offer a specialised subject would be an advantage. Contributions to the co-curricular programme such as sport or the creative arts would be welcome.
Class Teachers play a crucial role in supporting the wellbeing and welfare of pupils specifically under their care and serve as the key link between home and school. Applications from practising and well-qualified Catholics are encouraged; all teachers at St Anthony’s, irrespective of religious affiliation, are expected to be sympathetic to the Catholic ethos of the school. The person appointed will be expected to deliver PSHEE and (most likely) RE lessons, the content of which is stipulated by the Catholic Diocese of Westminster.
This is an exciting time for the school given the recent introduction of new schedules for assessment, tracking and reporting. The aim is to create an academic ‘flightpath’ for each pupil from Reception all the way through to key departure points at the end of Year 6 or Year 8. A dedicated ‘Wellbeing Room’ opened last summer the school avails of the services of a trained counsellor one full day each week.
Although we take our work seriously, St Anthony’s offers a warm and supportive professional environment where careers are developed and meaningful relationships forged. The post would suit either someone with experience or new to the profession.
