Job Description : About the role

This role will be the technical accounting expert (IFRS and UK GAAP) for National Grid plc. The role will provide expert technical accounting advice for large and complex internal and external transactions drafting technical accounting papers and working through the resolution of papers with Deloitte.

The role will own and maintain the Group accounting policies under IFRS, leading projects to review new exposure drafts as they are issued, participating in industry groups and drafting response letters on behalf of National Grid. They will also lead projects internally to implement new accounting standards, developing new or amending NG accounting policies and communicating those changes to accounting teams across the Group.

The role will also work on the production of National Grid plc’s half year results statement and full year Annual Report and Accounts (ARA) and 20F, preparing and reviewing disclosures and supporting Sox documentation and control evidence.

Key Accountabilities

Group Technical Accounting responsibilities• Act as the expert lead for IFRS and UK GAAP technical accounting by providing advice and solutions for the accounting and reporting issues encountered on a day-to-day basis across the Group.• Draft technical accounting papers for review by Deloitte, obtaining swift sign-off on the proposed conclusions in order to establish the accounting principles to be applied by local and Group accounting teams, supporting teams to understand the agreed accounting conclusions and working with them to implement on an operational basis.• Review technical accounting papers produced by our US team who draft papers on both the US GAAP and IFRS conclusions, ensuring agreement and sign-off on the Group IFRS impacts.• Lead projects to review and draft comment letters on new exposure drafts, representing National Grid on EFRAG and UKEB panels as applicable.. Also lead projects to implement new accounting standards as relevant to National Grid.• Own the group accounting policies disclosed in Annual Report and Accounts, ensuring Group policies are up to date with latest changes and guidance and shared with the businesses and external stakeholders (including the Group’s Exceptional Items policy).• Take a leading role in cross-functional working groups (including Legal, Co-Sec, Tax, Treasury, M&A and other businesses as applicable) to provide accounting advice and solutions for internal and external transactions, for example re-organisations or acquisitions and disposals.• Build relationships with external auditors and the internal business to make sure their requirements are understood and implemented within the team.• Develop external and internal relationships and sources to learn, adapt and implement best practice developments in technical accounting and reporting to support professional development of self and others, and for the benefit of National Grid.• Ensure the wider finance community at National Grid is kept abreast of technical developments through the running of technical seminars, updates and presentations as required.

Group external reporting responsibilities• Produce and review disclosures and operate and review key Sox controls for the half year results statement and year-end annual report and accounts. • Liaise with the external auditors Deloitte on requested deliverables and on issues arising during the statutory reporting process.

About you

• Experienced ACA Qualified Accountant with substantial post-qualified experience, ideally with experience of working for, or with, large regulated utilities.• Deep IFRS technical expertise, including with lease accounting and accounting for specialist areas such as for Treasury transactions (hedge accounting under IFRS 9).• Big Four background. • Experienced in M&A transactions and related accounting under IFRS 3 and IFRS 5.• Ability to take ownership of tasks, with a strong drive for results.• Highly proficient communicator with strong written skills. Self-motivated, proactive with excellent attention to detail.• A strong team player, with a thirst for developing relationships and information exchange.• Some knowledge of governance, risk and internal control frameworks.• Ability to build solid business relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

What you’ll get

A competitive salary between £74,000 – £92,000 – dependent on capability.

As well as your base salary, you will receive a company car or allowance, a bonus of up to 20% of your salary for stretch performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
