POSITION OVERVIEW

Canberra Health Services, Division of Allied Health, provides a range of allied health services including the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Liaison Services. A strong emphasis is placed across all sections on accessible and timely care, delivered to a high standard of safety and quality. This is underpinned by the Division’s commitment to research and training. The Division works in partnership with professional colleagues, consumers, and a range of government and non-government service providers to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients.
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Liaison Service (ALO Service) provides the cultural emotional and wellbeing support to patients and their family. The successful candidate will provide liaison and advocacy between patients, their families, staff and external organisations as appropriate. The ALO Service works across all inpatient Canberra Health Service areas including Women’s and Children’s, Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, Cancer Services, Medical and Surgical inpatient areas and the University of Canberra Hospital as well as provide support to patients attending outpatient’s appointments. The successful candidate will work within a small team environment as well as participate in multidisciplinary teams.
This position will also participate in quality initiatives that enhance service delivery for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities both locally and southern NSW.
DUTIES
Under limited direction of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Liaison Service Manager you will provide cultural emotional and wellbeing support to patients and their family. You will:
Act as a patient advocate within Canberra Health Services. While liaising between Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander patients, their families/friends, hospital staff and other health agencies as appropriate to the patients ongoing health needs.
Provide the Manager with feedback and advice in order to assist with the review of policies, practices and procedures relating to their interaction with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
Under limited supervision liaise effectively with local and interstate communities and other service providers on general service matters relating to patient support and service delivery.
Under limited supervision assist in the provision of appropriate health promotion activities.
Participate in quality improvement activities, including annual performance appraisal and under general direction provide input into reports, complete data collection.
Problem solve and contribute to proactive change management and a positive team culture across the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Liaison Service to support the staff in delivering high quality, culturally competent and consistent service.
Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Position Requirements/Qualifications:
Relevant knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, health and welfare issues. Experience working professionally with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and/or within a health setting is preferred.
The successful applicant may be required to participate in overtime, on call and rotation roster. Some weekend and public holiday duty will be required.
Have an understanding of how the National Standards and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
Fulfil the responsibilities of this role as detailed in the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, Partnering With Consumers Framework and all other related frameworks.
Note: This is a temporary position available for six months with the possibility of extension and/or permanency. This position is based at the Canberra Hospital, however duties are required across CHS, including the University of Canberra Hospital.
Prior to commencement successful candidates will be required to:
Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.
Obtain a Compliance Certificate from OMU (Occupational Medicine Unit) relating to assessment, screening, and vaccination processes against specified infectious diseases.

WHAT YOU REQUIRE
These are the key selection criteria for how you will be assessed in conjunction with your resumé and experience:
Proven knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ in contemporary Australian society, including an understanding of their respective societies and cultures.
Demonstrates ability to communicate sensitively and effectively, including the requirements for proper negotiations and consultation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Demonstrates computer literacy, including commonly deployed office tools such as Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel, and ability to rapidly acquire knowledge to use record keeping and statistical reporting systems.
Demonstrates sound communication skills; both interpersonal and written. Willingness to learn about effective liaison and relationship development with the multidisciplinary team and internal and external stakeholders.
Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, Work, Health and Safety (WHS) and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of Reliable, Progressive, Respectful, and Kind.
