POSITION OVERVIEW

Mental Health, Justice Health, Alcohol and Drug Services provides health services directly and through partnerships with community organisations. The services provided range from prevention and treatment to recovery and maintenance and harm minimisation. The participation of the people who use the service, including families and carers, is encouraged in all aspects of service planning and delivery. The Division works in partnership with a range of government and non-government service providers to ensure the best possible outcomes for clients.
The Division delivers services at a number of locations, including hospital inpatient and outpatient settings, community health centres, detention centres, other community settings including people’s home.

The Adult Acute Mental Health Services (AAMHS) covers AMHU which is an acute 40 bed inpatient unit for people experiencing moderate to severe mental illness, ward 12 B, a 10 bed low dependency unit for people suffering moderate mental illness, and MHSSU which is a low dependency 6 bed inpatient unit in the Emergency Department for people requiring extended mental health assessment and/or treatment initiation.

AAMHS is a contemporary evidence-based service providing high quality mental health care, guided by the principles of Recovery. The service aims to provide collaborative care involving the person, their carers and other key community services.
The AHA will provide assistance and support to the allied health team in the delivery of allied health services to consumers, under the supervision of an allied health professional.
The AHA does not make clinical assessment or clinical judgment in this role; however, they will be expected to recognise a change in consumer function and status and the possible impact on the planned program.
The position will report operationally to the Allied Health Manager of AAMHS. Professional governance of this position will come from the Discipline Principal Social work (MHJHADS).
This is a fulltime position within Adult Mental Health Unit working Monday to Friday.
DUTIES
Work Flexibly and effectively as part of the allied health team, providing support to all members of the allied health team and the wider multi-disciplinary team within scope of practice and training of the individual.

Participate and help facilitate the therapeutic group programs for people with complex and serious mental heal issues in an extended care environment. Exercise independent judgement on routine matters and under decreasing professional supervision when performing novel, complex or critical tasks.

Provide therapeutically beneficial assistance to people receiving care within the AMHU/MHSSU/Ward 12B Mental Health Unit, including assisting with transport/transfers to other services or units, assisting with the ongoing maintenance of allied health equipment, and assisting to supply appropriate equipment and referrals, under the direction of the supervising allied health professional, and within the scope of practice and training of the individual.

Coordinate assistance regarding access to relevant services and supports and support the discharge planning process.

Demonstrate communication skills to liase effectively with other health professionals, consumers, families/carers, colleagues and other service providers, including an ability to promptly complete clinical documentation meeting data collection requirements,

Participate in the implementation of clinical governance activity, quality improvement projects, research programs, and health promotion in areas relevant to the service.

Participate in clinical supervision, continuing professional development, and performance appraisal and development.

Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Position Requirements/Qualifications:
Mandatory:
Certificate IV in Mental Health or Allied Health Assistance (or equivalent qualification.
A minimum of 24 months experience in a related/ relevant organisation and/or service.
Current drivers’ licence .

Desirable:

Previous experience working within an inpatient mental health environment.

Note: This is a temporary position available immediately for a period of six months with the possibility of extension and/or permanency.
Prior to commencement successful candidates will be required to:
Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.
Obtain a Compliance Certificate from OMU (Occupational Medicine Unit) relating to assessment, screening, and vaccination processes against specified infectious diseases.

WHAT YOU REQUIRE

These are the key selection criteria for how you will be assessed in conjunction with your resumé and experience:
Proven experience providing allied health interventions to people with a mental illness or mental disorder.

Demonstrated ability to assist allied health professionals with therapeutic interventions / programs for people with a mental illness or mental disorder and to independently carry out therapeutic programs in an inpatient setting.

Sound verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrated by the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people including consumers, carers, and staff in a team environment.

Demonstrated problem solving skills, time management skills and ability to be flexible and priorities workload under minimal supervision.

Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, Work, Health and Safety (WHS) and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of Reliable, Progressive, Respectful, and Kind.
