Job Description
Position Title: NPD Head

Purpose of the Position

Lead the New Product Development initiative (idea to commercialization) by developing

NPD capabilities in line with growth plans at the Company.

Reporting To DIRECTOR
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1 Develop a strategic plan (up to 2 years) & define the priorities to develop New Products (idea to

commercial production)

2 Examine the existing products designs in Company’s portfolio to determine scope for re-design/

Improvement and initiate changes to enhance quality, aesthetics and efficacy.

3 Create a road map for New product development (timelines, vendor development, quality &

aesthetic standards, manufacturability & cost) and lead the delivery efforts.

4 Track the performance for new products (by collecting client feedback and experience) and

provide necessary literature (USP) to sales to enable value sell.

5 Develop testing protocols, including necessary design and testing processes, equipment and

techniques.

6 Work with vendors to develop new moulds, parts, material composition to develop differentiated

products

7 Develop the opex and capex budget plan for NPD in line with the targets/ growth objectives.

8 Identify new engineering technologies, automation, materials to enhance product manufacturing &

quality and work with Plant Head to enable adoption

9 Plan and budget the resource requirement for NPD

10 Coordinate and align the efforts of different departments – Sales, Plant, Marketing, Quality,

Procurement to capture requirements, share new product features and enable new product adoption

11 Develop alliances for NPD – design, manufacturing and testing to enhance quality and speed of

response.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

1: New Product development – design, aesthetics, quality and manufacturability : No. of products

developed; No. of products contributing to 2 –5% of revenue

2:Enabling production of new product – validation of design, trials, manufacturability – parts/ moulds

& tech

3: NPD pipeline

4: Existing product Quality Enhancement / upgrade – Nos
Requirements
Knowledge, Skills and personal attributes

Skills

Knowledge of materials viz. steel, alloy steels, bearings, plastic components, polyurethane etc.,

their properties and quality standards

Working Knowledge and current best practices in processes involved at the company, that

includes CNC machining, Welding (including robotic welding), metal stamping, product assembly

etc.

Thorough knowledge of tolerances and fitments required for different functionalities

Knowledge of implementing both low cost and high cost automation at various levels in production

processes to bring in efficiencies, increase production and reduce wastages

Knowledge of CAD/CAM solutions and design engineering, including simulations, 3D printing,

FEA analysis etc. to envision and design products and ideas on the drawing board. The company

is establishing its innovation centre shortly in which competent engineers are being hired.

Knowledge of plastic injection moulding, including tooling shall be an advantage

Knowledge of stamping tools and stamping processes is desired

Knowledge of current ISO/TS standards

Having a planned and methodical approach to projects with proper documentation

Person’s knowledge of “how to produce” is as essential as designing new products

Using his knowledge to improve current products and processes, bringing in manufacturing efficiencies by re-designing production processes and also reducing manufacturing costs
