Alexa Devices team in Pune designs and builds various delightful experience on Alexa multimodal devices (Echo Show family). From the first setup, while taking the device out of the box to support users’ all smart home devices, we strive for customer delight. Additionally, we package, customize, and deliver the entire Alexa experience to 2P partners like fire tablets and various 3P partners. As we scale up our devices and features, there are significant challenges that we need to solve for – providing the personalized information, status, and controls customers need at-a-glance, promptly with high operational standards, improve development agility – to name a few. The key deliverable is to build systems and technologies with a global impact, work with global teams and the best minds in the industry for re-imagining the future.

Key job responsibilities
The Alexa Devices organisation is looking for an experienced and talented Principal Engineer that has passion in designing and building end to end solution including small device to large-scale services. As an Alexa Devices Principal Engineer, you’ll be a technical leader. You’ll help establish technical standards and drive Alexa’s overall technical architecture and engineering practices. You’ll work on Alexa’s hardest problems, building high quality, architecturally sound systems that are aligned with our business needs. Principal Engineers are pragmatic visionaries who can translate business needs into workable technology solutions. Your expertise is deep and broad; you are hands on, producing both detailed technical work and high-level architectural designs.
As a PE in the Alexa Devices org, you will have a greater say in defining the technical strategy, identify the right long-term architecture for the device’s businesses roadmap. While building the architecture, you will be required to focus on the following tenets: engagement, performance, simplicity and efficiency. While you will have a high visibility as you will work with several engineering teams and their technical and product senior leadership, you will need exceptionally strong technical skills, strong business acumen, analytical skills, and be able to deal with ambiguity in a fast-paced environment.

A day in the life

Define the long-term technical strategy and architecture vision for data management, touch and voice experience, configurability for all device experience and leverage new technologies to deliver features to our customers
Think big and continuously pitch for foundational solutions that will help device businesses to use these solutions, where applicable, instead of building their own.
Define technical approach to ensure performance, reliability and fluidity is considered while providing foundational solutions for global teams
Partner with global 1P, 2P and 3P device teams to understand their customer needs and influence technical roadmap
Analyze the business opportunity to externalize all of our components for 3P devices
Assist in the career development of others, actively mentoring individuals and the Amazon developer community on advanced technical issues and helping managers guide the career growth of their team members.
Exert technical influence over multiple global teams, increasing their productivity and effectiveness by sharing your deep knowledge and experience.

As a Principal Engineer in the Alexa Devices team, you will help drive innovation by developing features not just Echo Show, Echo Spot, but also on other high-profile consumer electronics products including Fire TV, Fire Tablets and vast 3P family of devices.

A strong track record of project delivery for large, ambiguous, cross-functional, projects.
Strong technical credentials and deep hands-on technical expertise.
Development experience on mobile platforms such as Google Android
Superior software design and architecture knowledge
Champion of E2E product and development cycle
Experience with Amazon Web Services, Alexa Skills development
Knowledge of professional software engineering practices and proven methodologies for the full software development process (SDLC), including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
