BACKGROUND
This is for local recruitment. The remuneration and benefits package for this position is established with reference to the local labour market and in line with the IUCN conditions of service in the respective duty station where the candidate will be assigned.
The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species is a well-established knowledge product of IUCN; it is widely recognized as the most comprehensive, objective global approach for evaluating the conservation status of fungi, plant and animal species. To maintain and further improve the status of the IUCN Red List, there needs to be cutting-edge, efficient and performance enhancing tools that underpin the proper functioning of such a widely used and valued knowledge product.
The Application Developer should be keen and passionate about building state of the art applications, and the nature of the job. The successful candidate will work closely with a network of conservation scientists, other web and geospatial experts, and will be responsible for maintaining and building on the current high-profile systems behind the IUCN Red List.
We are looking for a developer who would be a keen self-motivated technology enthusiast, who is not daunted by trying out new technologies and be able to think outside the box, with an eye for optimisation, performance, security and understand the complexities of data management. The position involves the handling of critical data, hence good management and organization skills are also required. The developer would be expected to work in a team that manages the full-stack of critical web applications.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Software Developer will build and implement software/application tasks, working with other Developers and Product Managers throughout the software development life cycle. This role will build efficient programs and systems that serve user needs.
A. Design, develop, test, and maintain software solutions custom-built to support the Red List websites and GIS related activities.
B. Lead the maintenance and improvement of current web systems.
C. Deliver solutions according to agreed-upon requirements and within timeline.
D. Coordinate with stakeholders to identify pain points in the software delivery process and initiate process improvement activities.
E. Conduct R&D activities to identify industry best practices and technologies that will help improve the quality and efficiency of the different steps in the software delivery process.
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
Provide technical support in the ongoing development of the Species Information Service, Red List websites and related applications.Contribute to design of architecture of applications.Implement of a robust set of services and APIs to power web applications.Build reusable code and libraries.Lead implementation of secure systems and data protection.Translate UI/UX wireframes to visual web elements.Integrate front-end and back-end aspects of the web application, including testing as part of development process.Learn new technologies and stay on top of trends in web development.Advise on, and in some cases manage deployment and hosting required for applications.Support the maintenance of web applications and databases where required.Ensure that stakeholders have access to the information, tools, and services necessary for each aspect of the software delivery process.Support the line manager in developing better approaches and platforms for improving the Red List processes.Assist the Line Manager in translation user needs to system requirements.Collaborate and maintain good working relationships with the team.
REQUIREMENTS
Essential:
Bachelor’s degree or Higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering or equivalent, with relevant working experience; or
Experienced in developing web-based applications using multiple technologies like Ruby on Rails, Python, NodeJS, Java, HTML, Javascript, and CSS;
Proficient in data management and SQL databases like PostgreSQL is essential. Front-end experience, as well as knowledge of application deployment would be an advantage;
Commercial experience in a software development team;
Familiar and experience with javascript-based frameworks and libraries;
Comfortable using GIT/Version control;
Delivered projects in an Agile environment using modern web frameworks and cloud-based services;
Excellent management and organization skills; Understands good design, user interface and interaction, or is keen to learn;
Desirable:
Experience in React / Vue.js, as well as continuous integration and deployment;
Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and relevant software such as ArcGIS and QGIS;
Web Mapping experience (using PostGIS, CartoDB or ArcGIS, and front-end mapping technologies such as Leaflet / Mapbox/ OpenLayers and the likes);
Continuous integration and deployment experience
