Job summary
The Alexa Voice Service’s – Setup & Discovery (AVS S&D) team’s mission is to delight all Alexa 3P customers with a simple and personalized experience to set up Alexa and continuously discover what Alexa can do. We do this by building a suite of product experiences that span the customer lifecycle, from purchase through to ongoing engagement. Through our setup solutions, our goal is to raise awareness of Alexa on Alexa Built-in third-party devices, educate customers on Alexa’s value, and provide personalized and simple onboarding experiences. Our north star is to maximize the number of customers that experience a one-click registration assisted by Amazon apps and devices that belong to them.

The AVS S&D organization is looking for an experienced and talented Principal Engineer that has passion in designing and building scalable and extensible end-to-end solutions across small device to large-scale services. As AVS S&D Principal Engineer, you’ll be a technical leader. You’ll help establish technical standards and drive AVS S&D organization’s overall technical architecture and engineering practices. You’ll work on Alexa’s hardest problems, building high quality, architecturally sound systems that are aligned with our business needs. Principal Engineers are pragmatic visionaries who can translate business needs into workable technology solutions. Your expertise is deep and broad; you are hands on, producing both detailed technical work and high-level architectural designs. As a PE, you will have a greater say in defining the technical strategy, identify the right long-term architecture for our businesses roadmap. While building the architecture, you will be required to focus on the following tenets: customer acquisition, engagement, performance, simplicity and efficiency. While you will have a high visibility as you will work with several engineering teams across broader Alexa and non-Alexa organization, and their technical and product senior leadership, you will need to have exceptionally strong technical skills, strong business acumen, analytical skills, and be able to deal with ambiguity in a fast-paced environment.

Key job responsibilities

Define the long-term technical strategy and architecture vision for scalable Alexa Built-In device provisioning strategies across various product lines such as wearables, wearables, multimodal and smart displays, simplification of third-party onboarding and integration experiences, driving higher Alexa engagement, and leverage new technologies to deliver simplified S&D features to our customers.
Think big and continuously pitch for foundational solutions that will help our third party businesses to use these solutions, where applicable, instead of building their own.
Define technical approach to ensure performance, reliability and fluidity is considered while providing foundational solutions.
Partner with broader 1P, 2P and 3P Alexa organization to understand their architecture and influence their technical roadmap to support Alexa on 3P devices.
Analyze the business opportunity to externalize all of our components for 3P devices.
Assist in the career development of others, actively mentoring individuals and the Amazon developer community on advanced technical issues and helping managers guide the career growth of their team members.
Exert technical influence over multiple global teams, increasing their productivity and effectiveness by sharing your deep knowledge and experience.
A strong track record of project delivery for large, ambiguous, cross-functional, projects.
Strong technical credentials and deep hands-on technical expertise.
Development experience on mobile platforms such as Google Android
Superior software design and architecture knowledge
• Champion of E2E product and development cycle
Experience with Amazon Web Services, Alexa Skills development
Knowledge of professional software engineering practices and proven methodologies for the full software development process (SDLC), including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
