Job Purpose & Accountabilities:
Senior Data Engineer is a key role within Sectors Decarbonisation & Global Lubricants Information & Digital Technology Service & Operations Management (SOM) teams that consists of fast-growing portfolios such as:
Sectors & Decarbonisation
Strategic Ventures & Accounts
Data & Digital Products Operations
This is a newly established business and team post Organisational Reshape and currently operating as a start-up that is rapidly evolving to scale up to enable a global business of USD 5+ Billion annual C5 contributions to bottom line. We are looking for a highly flexible and adaptable individual who has high resilience to ambiguity, uncertainly and transformational change to solve one of biggest problems in world to decarbonise meet Net Zero ambitions globally across different industrial sectors.
The Senior Data Engineer is responsible for providing functional & operational support and optimizing the data pipeline architecture, as well as optimizing data flow and collection for cross functional teams. Senior Data Engineer will work on Data Platform and 25+ Data Products along with the entire engineering team. Senior data Engineer will enable business value and support our software developers, database architects, data analysts and data scientists on data initiatives and will ensure support and maintenance activities are delivered throughout the lifecycle of the product. The individual must be self-directed and comfortable supporting the data needs of multiple teams, systems, and products. The right candidate will be excited by the prospect of supporting, optimizing or even re-designing Shell’s data architecture to support our next generation of products and data initiatives.
Principal Accountabilities:
Maintain optimal data pipeline architecture.
Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.
Support the infrastructure required for optimal extraction, transformation, and loading of data from a wide variety of data sources using SQL and Azure, AWS ‘big data’ technologies.
Work with analytics tools that utilize the data pipeline to provide actionable insights into operational efficiency and other key business performance metrics.
Work with stakeholders including the Executive, Product, Data and Design teams to assist with data-related technical issues and support their data infrastructure needs.
Keep our data separated and secure across national boundaries through multiple data centres and Azure, AWS regions.
Work with data and analytics experts to strive for greater functionality in our data systems.
Work with business users to understand the domain knowledge and troubleshooting of product issues.
Coach and mentor other Data Engineers in the team
Technical Skills & Experience Requirements:
Advanced working SQL knowledge and experience working with relational databases, query authoring (SQL) as well as working familiarity with a variety of databases.
Experience performing root cause analysis on internal and external data and processes to answer specific business questions and identify opportunities for improvement.
Strong analytic skills related to working with unstructured datasets.
A successful history of manipulating, processing, and extracting value from large, disconnected datasets.
Working knowledge of message queuing, stream processing, and highly scalable ‘big data’ data stores.
Experience supporting and working with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment.
Good experience of working in product team and DevOps operating model
Experience with Azure: Data Bricks, Data Factory, Data Lake, Stream Analytics, SQL DW, COSMOS DB, Analysis Services, Azure Functions, Serverless Architecture, ARM Templates
Experience with relational SQL and NoSQL databases, including Postgres and Cassandra.
Experience with object-oriented/object function scripting languages: Python, SQL, Scala, Spark-SQL, PY-Spark etc.
Experience with big data tools: Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, etc.
Experience with data pipeline and workflow management tools: Azkaban, Luigi, Airflow, etc.
Experience with stream-processing systems: Storm
Experience in SAP HANA or SAP BW
Experience with Power BI & GitHub
Graduate degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Informatics, Information Systems, or another quantitative field (not mandatory).

This position manages overall delivery, outages, for landscapes thereby ensuring availability, reliability, and overall supportability on a 7×24, 365-day basis. If this job is not done well and accurately, any/all the risks above could occur.
General Skills & Requirements:
10 to 15 years of experience of corporate IT Operations experience
Minimum Education or Certification: 4-year Degree related to IT
Self-starter with good analysis and problem-solving skills.
Experience in IT applications support, ITIL processes and IT services management.
Ability to deal with conflict and ambiguity effectively
A good understanding of large-scale distributed systems in practice, including multi-tier architectures, application security, monitoring, and storage systems
Proven record of delivering against stretch targets
Strong stakeholder, interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills
Proven ability to deliver results in a matrix organization driving delivery excellence through influence and team working
Ability to operate in a virtual cross-cultural organization
Ability to take periodic calls outside of working hours to facilitate working in a global environment
