DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Disability Resource Center (DRC) leads UC Santa Cruz in providing educational equity and a welcoming environment for students with disabilities. The DRC identifies legally mandated Accommodations that address disabling barriers and work with faculty and students to remove or mitigate various barriers. The DRC educates campus stakeholders on disability diversity and equal educational access. The team ensures compliance with State, Federal and local laws and ensures compliance with UC policies.

JOB SUMMARY

Under the general direction of the Disability Resource Center (DRC) Assistant Director, the Senior Service Coordinator acts as a DRC liaison with campus stakeholders functioning as an organizational lead for supporting disability management and ensures legal compliance with regulations under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Using knowledge and skills as a qualified, experienced professional in the disabilities field, this position engages with a wide range of accommodation issues on a case by case basis. Applies critical thinking to accommodation decisions, and applies legal paradigms and best practices for formulating processes to implement accommodations. The position will participate in handling escalated or appealed accommodation decisions, and consults with the DRC administrator group for particularly contentious issues and / or highly complex situations. Some appealed or escalated cases will be referred to the campus ADA Coordinator.

JOB DUTIES

50% – Direct Services to Students with Disabilities/Case Management

Functions as an organizational resource and process expert as it relates to education and accommodations for international students, graduate students, specific academic disciplines, etc.
Conducts interviews with new and prospective students to determine appropriate level of service (provisional, temporary, permanent) for support services and ADA academic accommodations.
Utilizes knowledge of complex federal and state legislation (ADA, FHA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act) to conduct the interactive process and to interpret disability documentation from medical service providers in order to identify eligible students with disabilities.
Reviews documentation for Housing and Emotional Support Animal Requests.
Provides disability management advising to students and makes appropriate referrals; authorizes disability related academic accommodations and coordinates support services for a caseload of students.
Advises Coordinators with high-level cases involving complex disability issues that may also need to be escalated to the campus ADA Officer or Behavioral Intervention Team.
Provides back-up advising for colleagues in their absence.
Generates case notes for all significant contacts and appropriate and accurate data entry into the DRC database.

30% – Liaison with Faculty/Staff/Students/Community

Offers guidance and instruction regarding compensatory strategies and techniques to ensure students’ access to the academic environment.
Organizes meetings with other campus partners and/or departments regarding updated information on policies/procedures.
Discusses accommodation needs with professors, including essential course requirements, learning objectives and technical standards.

15% – Supervision and Leadership

Involved with the recruitment and training of new staff.
Serves as Senior member of the DRC Service Coordinator team and engages in/leads consultations regarding emerging legal and technological information, discussion of difficult cases and challenging requests for academic accommodations. Assists other team members in identifying the nexus between the impact of student’s disability(s) and campus barriers, including the rationale behind approved or denied accommodations.
Assists in the development and implementation of process documents and improvement of existing DRC processes.
Supervises professional staff and/or students
May supervise professional staff and/or students.
Leads the Service Coordinator team in the absence of the Assistant Director.

5% – Other

Performs other duties, as assigned, as needed to support the DRC’s mission and goals.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Advanced knowledge of the legal framework and paradigms involving accommodations for students with disabilities established in state and federal laws and regulations. Keeps apprised of current higher education trends/best practices and proposes changes for post-secondary academic disability services.
Advanced knowledge of procedures for assessing and determining disability accommodation issues, including the Disability Compliance Office procedures.
Ability to interpret medical and diagnostic reports, summarize reports written by others, and use them to determine reasonable accommodations on a case by case basis.
Knowledge and experience in analyzing complex situations and identifying solutions for problems, with the ability to see patterns and trends in the field of post-secondary services.
Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion in handling confidential materials and matters, and determine when to escalate matters to appropriate resources. Ability to apply good judgment in resource management.
Excellent oral and written communications skills to develop and lead presentations and to interact cooperatively and effectively with students, parents, staff, and faculty at all levels of the organization.
Excellent interpersonal and listening skills, and ability to remain calm and professional in stressful situations; including the demonstrated ability to interact professionally, share and gather information, and respond appropriately to student, staff and faculty needs.
Strong organizational skills.
Ability to keep accurate records and appropriately maintain the confidentiality of sensitive records.
High level of cultural fluency and a demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to working through issues related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and the multiple, intersecting identities of campus community members.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s Degree in Rehab Counseling, Student Affairs in Higher Ed, Disabilities Studies
Experience working with and serving with adults with disabilities in higher education.
Experience with the delivery of mental health services.
Knowledge and skills in universal design / inclusive pedagogy.
Bilingual in Spanish/ English, or ASL/English.
