Job Description : *This role can be remote across the UK but ideally will be commutable to London for occasional office visits. The candidate will regularly work with our Australian team so will be required to be flexible with attending early morning meetings*

Rail is set to dominate short and medium-haul travel around the world. Its faster, cheaper, greener and more convenient than air travel, and it cuts down on the carbon-emitting congestion of road travel. With the current climate crisis it’s more important than ever to put this mode of transport at the forefront of people’s minds. For every travel company, having rail as a booking option is like having vegan choices on the menu – it’s a must! The trouble is, there’s been nothing modern about rail’s online customer experience… until now.

We are SilverRail, a global tech company working to solve this problem by delivering the digital infrastructure that opens up rail to the world! Our technology is powering rail and travel agencies across Europe, USA and Australia/NZ in both leisure and corporate markets, making it easy for people to choose rail and cut their carbon emissions.

Although we have been around for more than 10 years, and with our teams based globally in London, Boston, Brisbane and Stockholm, we still consider ourselves an agile start-up business. We are using the Scrum framework for all our software development, and we believe in ‘fail-fast-fail-early’ to find innovative solutions to complex problems. Our agility and refreshingly novel approaches mean we have already developed into a force to be reckoned with in the European market but we have ambitions for so much more! With a raft of new clients joining us, and with our growth about to enter its prime, we aim to become the biggest player in the rail tech space.

The Role

As a key member of the SilverRail Product and Engineering team, you will interact directly with key customers and suppliers in the rail and travel market to gather requirements and provide direct technical support in the implementation of our solutions. You will also assist with business development initiatives, and formulate strategies for building solutions that enable SilverRail Technologies and our customers to improve their positioning in the industry. You will help define the functional architecture and design for our rail products including IPTIS, our journey planner, and SilverCore, our SAAS solution for global rail distribution. IPTIS is the market-leading rail journey planner in the UK. It consumes a comprehensive set of rail timetables and fares, applies complex business rules and finds journeys for travellers using our proprietary optimisation algorithms. SilverCore aggregates ticket offerings from multiple rail carriers around the world into a normalized and easily-consumable common transactional API that supports the full booking lifecycle from shopping through to settlement. Each new rail company we integrate into the system presents different challenges, so you will need to understand both the business and technical side of rail distribution in order to effectively plan and scope the necessary API changes.

This position will be the interface between teams in Australia and the UK. You will be responsible for championing change, providing detailed direction and planning, and representing the technical and functional needs of the customer within the company. The role is a critical hands-on delivery role requiring strong organisation and coordination skills, great communication, strong technical aptitude and a passion for owning a solution space.

Key Responsibilities

Work with delivery team to assist customers with implementation and certification, and help diagnose and triage customer reported issues
Build relationships with customers to inspire confidence and identify opportunities for SilverRail
Work with rail providers to understand their business functions and technologies
Accurately and appropriately map those business functions for integration into our rail APIs
Participate in the development of the product roadmap
Create comprehensive product requirement documents, functional specifications, use cases, process flows, and sequence diagrams
Participate in the definition and prioritization of software releases and product plans
Serve as product owner for agile development team
Work with the Development and QA teams to ensure the successful implementation of product features
Management of the product and task backlog (Jira) – helping guide great prioritisation decisions and organising work for scrum teams that achieves effective, efficient and timely outcomes
Identify market opportunities to improve products
Note that you will have key relationships with colleagues in Australia which requires early morning meetings as part of your daily routine.

Competence and Skills

The ideal candidate has at least 2+ years of experience as a product owner, technical analyst, or software developer. Technical expertise, that you would gain, for example, as a developer or tester is essential. However, we’re more interested in seeing how your skills match up than length of your resume.
Ideally some experience in cloud deployment and automation technologies (AWS is a plus)
Project management experience is a plus
Demonstrable understanding and experience with APIs
Proficiency writing user stories, product requirements and specifications for SAAS applications
Ability to communicate precisely and clearly, lacking ambiguity
Excellent interpersonal, analytic, and problem-solving skills
Displays willingness to take on challenges, and flexibility towards shifting priorities
Ability to serve as a liaison between development team and internal and external business teams
Ability to represent the customer and their requirements to scrum teams
Ability to understand the need, opportunity, drivers and objectives behind technical and architectural product change
Ability to work independently and perform multiple tasks under minimal supervision
Establishes healthy relationships based on mutual respect
Passion for continuous improvement and innovation
Takes responsibility and is self-accountable for product quality
Prior experience in the global travel industry and/or familiarity with the rail market
