Summary
An IT Operations engineer working within the xxxxxx department to collaborate with developers and testers with a view of improving quality of deployments in to the upper environments. The engineer will be working on release management to better track changes and manage roll back processes with an objective of better production stability and release quality, speed and crucially efficiency. The successful candidate will have a solid understanding of monitoring and observability to aid a proactive observability strategy. The candidate should have knowledge and experience of data analytics and data mining, understanding key golden signals in monitoring and observability and be able to demonstrate excellent knowledge in optimisation of data gathering, event correlation, visualisations and essential alerting indicators across both traditional infrastructure and distributed micro service event driven architectures. Skills in a log indexing / aggregation tool are beneficial with a preferred focus on Splunk experience. Knowledge of distributed tracing and microservice technologies advantageous but not essential. Although not required initially, having knowledge of CI/CD tooling with a devops mindset for automated testing and deployments and good scripting / troubleshooting skills would be also beneficial.
The candidate will have good communication skills and able to work efficiently and effectively in an increasingly agile fashion.
Major Duties
Aid in improving release QA with experience using ServiceNow
Manage change, incident and problem tickets ensuring follow up on actions and resolutions is a key requirement. Aim to reduce repeated occurrences of any incidents
Able to prioritise incidents and able to articulate the reasoning and impact for further discussion
Release management with ability to propose ideas around continual improvement, release speed and release efficiency whilst also improving quality
Identify operational priorities ensuring they are aligned to department / team objectives including cost savings, operational convenience and automation activities
Work constructively as a team member ensuring work is agreed and in-line with set tasks whilst embracing collaboration and openly sharing ideas and concerns
Analyse data with an appetite for managing data in large complex environments and how to improve data structures for improving observability and QA. Use this to recommend process improvements and design changes
Mining data in Splunk with emphasis on extracting relevant data to build complex visualisations, dashboards and observability capabilities
Troubleshoot and review security concerns and help drive security improvements, manage certificate expirations and renewals
Knowledge of application security principles such as SSL and 2FA / MFA concepts, data anonymization and sensitivity around PI data especially for testing
Work with infrastructure teams on new platform builds as required ensuring they are fully operational before applications are marked as production live
Be a key engineer in any DR / BCP testing, working with application teams where possible to improve DR / HA capabilities
Troubleshoot on a mixture of operating systems and databases such as network, process, database issues and be competent in helping determine the root cause of errors / failures
On call escalation point but not on rota to assist on call team if required on out of hours incidents
Knowledge/ Skills
Experience with Agile, Scrum, Kanban and contributing to manage day to day project based activities
BAU and incident related activities managed via ServiceNow with strategic fixes managed in Jira
Excellent experience using ServiceNow to manage change, incident, problem and work task activities
Good OS troubleshooting skills especially around Windows and Linux including process, network and performance requiring good skills in CLI tools
Use of a data aggregation tool, preferably Splunk to aggregate log and metric data and use this to build observability dashboards with a focus on proactive support
Knowledge in troubleshooting eCommerce / http / https / restful applications, including http error codes, SSL certificates and traditional 3 tier architectures including load balancing and session state, key skills around Apache, IIS and Websphere, reverse proxy knowledge beneficial
Understand how DNS works and capable of troubleshooting DNS related issues
SQL / PL SQL experience to troubleshoot database issue with a view to automate such checks, general understanding of databases including table spaces, indexes and data growth management
Understanding of docker, Kubernetes or tanzu and how distributed tracing works and how this might interface to an event fabric such as kafka
Use of GIT and related Devops tooling as well as pipeline creation and implementation with release and change control processes
Strong Skills in visualisations such as ITRS Geneos, Splunk DB’s, App Dynamics and web services monitoring
Knowledge and experience of ITRS Geneos from setting up new monitors, use of plugins, rules and cross dataview correlations with advanced rule configuration
Experience with automated alerting / call out tools such as OpsGenie or VictorOps beneficial
Solid understanding of Java concepts such as JMX, memory usage and how to profile / monitor these
Cloud concepts or experience with cloud activities, although not essential would be beneficial
Solid understanding of Windows processes and monitoring / troubleshooting
Strong analytical, troubleshooting and problem solving skills
Clear, concise communication (written and verbal)

At least five year’s high grade experience as an IT Ops capacity able to work with multi-disciplined teams with a view of delivering effective monitoring and observability and support for complex application architectures.
