POSITION OVERVIEW

Canberra Health Services (CHS) is focussed on the delivery of high quality, effective, person centred care. It provides acute, sub-acute, primary and community‐based health services, to the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and surrounding region. Adult Acute Mental Health Services currently incorporates the Adult Mental Health Unit (AMHU), Ward 12B Mental health Unit, the Mental Health Short Stay Unit (MHSSU), and the Consultation Liaison (CL) Team across the Emergency Department and The Canberra Hospital (TCH).
AMHU is a 40-bed inpatient Facility comprised of a High Dependency Unit (HDU) and Low Dependence Unit (LDU), Ward 12B Mental Health Unit is a 10-bed low dependency inpatient unit these units are for people experiencing moderate to severe mental illness. These units provide a contemporary evidence-based service providing high quality mental health care, guided by the principles of Recovery. The service aims to provide collaborative care involving the patient, their carers and other key services. MHSSU is a 6-bed low dependency inpatient unit in the ED for people requiring extended mental health assessment and or treatment initiation.

At this level the CNE is responsible for clinical teaching and the development of nursing practice within a therapeutic environment. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Nursing and will liaise with the Clinical Nurse Consultants (CNC) to deliver and lead education, both internal and external to the Division, in support of ongoing clinical education, preceptorship, mandatory skills assessment, and competency assessment processes for nurses working in the AAMHS inpatient units.
You will be required to undertake professional development and supervision, participate in quality improvement initiatives, and contribute to the multidisciplinary team processes.
DUTIES

Under limited direction of the Assistant Director of Nursing, Adult Acute Mental Health inpatient services:

The AAMHS Clinical Nurse Educator is a Registered Nurse responsible for providing design, implementation and assessment of nursing education programs incorporating adult learning principles, managing educational resources, and providing high quality mental health education to staff working within the AAMHS.

You will:

Facilitate clinical teaching of nurses within the workplace utilising adult learning principles and following practice standards and policies.

Facilitate reflective practice for nurses and provide direct clinical advice and support to nursing staff as required.

Participate in risk management, quality improvement, nursing practice review, staff development and performance, clinical audit, clinical research activities and preceptorship of new staff and nursing students.

Work collaboratively with colleagues and leaders and maintain in depth knowledge of legislation affecting nursing practice within ACT Health and the AAMHS.

Provide active input into the development and revision of clinical policy and practice manuals.

Cultivate and maintain professional relationships with peak bodies in relation to care delivery within a therapeutic ward environment to facilitate the development and revision of clinically specific educational requirements, including maintaining the AAMHS Occupational Violence training portfolio in coordination with CHS Staff Development Unit.

Provide and develop clinical education, mandatory skills assessment, and competency assessment processes for nurses working in the AAMHS.

Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Position Requirements/Qualifications:
Mandatory:
Be registered or be eligible for registration with the National Nursing and Midwifery Board through the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA),

Holds, is working towards or is agreeable to work towards a certificate IV in Training and Assessment within the probational period.

Desirable:
Current Driver’s Licence.

Holds or is working towards a post graduate qualification, and/or has demonstrated advanced knowledge, skills and experience, in the area of adult education and clinical practice development.

Note: The Successful candidate may be selected based on application only. A merit list/pool may be established from this process that can be used to fill similar vacancies within the unit over the next 12 months.

Prior to commencement successful candidates will be required to:
Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.
Obtain a Compliance Certificate from OMU (Occupational Medicine Unit) relating to assessment, screening, and vaccination processes against specified infectious diseases.

WHAT YOU REQUIRE

These are the key selection criteria for how you will be assessed in conjunction with your resumé and experience:
Proven clinical competence within the relevant area of specialty and a commitment to preceptorship, clinical supervision and practice development and an ability to demonstrate effective clinical leadership within a health environment.

Application of adult learning principles to assist nurses in the assessment of their own learning needs and the assimilation and application of knowledge and skills and the evaluation of nursing outcomes.

Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills and the application of counselling and negotiation skills with both individuals and small groups.

Ability to demonstrate and apply specialty nursing practice knowledge in the clinical setting and to undertake clinical research and nursing quality improvement initiatives.

Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, Work, Health and Safety (WHS) and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of Reliable, Progressive, Respectful, and Kind.
