Position Overview:
WRI India’s Sustainable Landscapes and Restoration program aims to inform India’s transition towards sustainable food and land use systems. The focus of the work is to develop strategies around protecting, maintaining and restoring forest and agricultural landscapes to secure livelihoods of 700 million people directly dependent on forests and agriculture and strengthen India’s environmental well-being.
In this context, WRI India is working with Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU) platform in India to develop strategies to enable a transition of Indian agriculture towards more sustainable and regenerative practices at the landscape level in three states. WRI India is seeking an exceptional candidate for the work to be undertaken in one district in Maharashtra, which it is leading. WRI India adapted the Restoration Opportunity Assessment Methodology (ROAM) developed by IUCN and WRI for the Indian context by applying it in Sidhi district in Madhya Pradesh. This position supports adapting the framework for Gadchiroli district in Maharashtra as a critical Nature-based Solution (NbS). The position is most suited to an individual who has an interdisciplinary research background in agriculture, forestry, and ecology. The position holder must be willing to travel within the country, including in remote areas with difficult terrain.
Scope of Work/Responsibilities:
The Senior research analyst will undertake series of activities listed below:
Research (65%)
Support the development of research framework and data collection tools towards development of strategies and landscape level implementation plans with focus on sustainable and regenerative agricultural interventions considering larger landscape.
Support the data collection and analysis at the landscape level.
Support training on adapted Restoration Opportunity Assessment Methodology (ROAM) for partners.
Desk based review of government data, published literature and grey literature on sustainable and regenerative practices with focus on the socio-ecological and economic impact of these policies.
Identify key actors, networks, institutions and other stakeholders involved in supporting and implementing sustainable and regenerative agriculture and convergence potentials through innovative and participatory tools like social landscape analysis.
Carry out the Cost Benefit Analysis of the landscape level implementation plan in one landscape.
Support writing, analysis and production of high-quality knowledge products (reports, policy briefs, working papers) that encapsulate research findings.
Support developing of communication products like articles, op-eds, briefs to simplify research findings to an external audience.
Project Management (15%)
Support in coordination of the research and development of landscape level implementation plans.
Support in coordination the programme activities to ensure the timely delivery of deliverables and achievements of milestones.
Support in high quality documentation and timely reporting of the programme.
Training and Capacity Building (20%)
Capacity building support to programme partners in understanding frameworks and tools developed for landscape level interventions.
Deliverables:
Master’s degree in Agriculture, natural sciences, environmental sciences, or any related disciplines. PhD preferred.
At least 4 years or above post-study research experience relating to agriculture and natural resource management issues and policies, etc.
Understanding of landscape restoration approach and familiarity with Sustainable and regulative agricultural practices and restoration related policies, schemes and programmes in Maharashtra
Demonstrated ability to work both independently as well as part of an interdisciplinary team
Demonstrated skills of engaging in participatory approaches, and high levels of comfort in working with scientific data as well as local knowledge. Proficiency in quantitative and qualitative data analysis is a requirement.
Excellent/ Strong research, interpersonal/ written/ communication skills
Ability to present complex information in a clear and concise manner
Demonstrated skills preparing programme documents, reports, policy briefs etc.
Fluency in spoken and written English and Hindi is essential. Fluency in spoken and written Marathi preferable.
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint is a requirement.
Potential Salary: 10,00,000 to 11,50,000 INR CTC Per annum
Salary and Benefits:
Salary shall be commensurate with experience and skills. WRI offers a generous and comprehensive benefits package.
Duration: Term Hire till March 2023 (Extendable based on performance and project requirements)
