Job Description : Role of the counsellorKRA: Early identification and intervention of children’s academic and personal/social needs is essential in removing barriers to learning and in promoting academic achievement. The counsellor is expected to provide education, prevention and intervention services, which are integrated into all aspects of children’s lives.Role of the counsellor: School counselor may be required to provide services to students throughIndividual counseling- The school counselor works with students on an individual basis to help meet the needs of a child.Small group counseling- The school counselor offers a wide range of small groups focusing on matters like- Grief/Loss, self-esteem, study skills, social skills and friendship building, time management, etc.Classroom guidance lessons1. Conducting lessons to classes on a regular basis on domains like: 2. Personal/social, academic achievement, and career development. 3. Character education. The character traits focused on throughout the year are respect, responsibility, caring, justice/fairness, honesty/trustworthiness, self-discipline, integrity, and cooperation.The counselor will also spend time addressing issues like bullying by helping the students learn strategies to handle bullies and improve their assertiveness skills. The counsellor will need to work collaboratively with parents and teachers to decide on what action needs to be taken to address issues interfering with a student’s learning process.
