The Smiths tax team comprises about 20 individuals working across a matrix combining regional responsibilities (across the Americas, Europe and APAC and a corporate team based in London) with divisional business partnering activities.

Since 2018 when a new Head of Tax was appointed, the Group has substantially transformed the tax function in order to better support the evolution of the Smiths business in an increasingly complex global tax environment.

To support the delivery of its objectives, Smiths is expanding the international tax function with this new Asia Pacific Tax Manager role.
Job Purpose
The Asia Pacific (“APAC”) Tax Manager will work closely with the Senior Tax Manager – EMEA & APAC and be responsible for the management of all tax compliance obligations (in partnership with our global compliance provider), tax reporting, tax audit & risk management, strategic planning, and project work for all Smiths companies in the APAC region. Over time, the role will provide the opportunity to expand into wider areas of tax including technology, policy, and geographical scope.

Based in Bangalore, Delhi or Pune and working alongside Divisional Finance teams, the role will have the opportunity to travel to other divisional locations in India.

Job Responsbilities
APAC:

Implementation and local monitoring of tax policy, best practice, and minimum operating standards to ensure compliance with corporate tax policy
Identification and management of tax risk and those specifically arising from tax audits. The implementation of procedures to manage and reduce this risk, as part of the Tax Function’s overall risk framework.
Management of the annual tax filing and compliance process for all APAC companies alongside the outsourced tax compliance function to ensure accurate and timely filed tax returns.
Support Finance with the Group’s half yearly and annual tax accounting processes, particularly with current and deferred tax calculations
Assisting finance teams with production of supporting documentation for inter-company charges and other transfer pricing matters.
Coordinate CBC notifications and reports to be filed for APAC companies
Provision of day-to-day tax support, working where necessary with tax advisors, to Smiths’ companies in APAC
Support local financial controllers in new business initiatives, supply chain and contracting models, and on wider tax related projects including changing regulation, planning opportunities and M&A.
Work effectively with the Corporate Tax and Transfer Pricing teams currently based in the UK, US and Germany.
Keep up to date with developments in tax laws within the region and communicate relevant actions to Finance and Group Tax.

INDIA:

Coordinate tax filings process for all Indian ITR and TP filings – Indian entities and non-resident entities and review tax returns and TP returns prepared by Deloitte before filing
Liaise with Deloitte to support Finance with queries on tax filings, review notices/letters from tax authorities and prepare responses and maintain status of each year tax filing and payment for all Indian entities and non-resident entities
Prepare and file WHT and TCS returns
Support Finance with calculation of quarterly advance tax payments for all companies in India
Support Finance with direct taxes matters in the Statutory audit process.
Individual
Education Requirements

Required/Preferred

Accounting or related degree
Qualified Chartered Accountant with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in an accounting firm or large multinational group.

Experience required

Significant experience in tax accounting/reporting (practical knowledge and experience of IAS12 and related accounting standards)
Significant experience in dealing with assessments from tax offices
Experience of international tax would be beneficial

Technical Knowledge and Skills

Ability to analyse and review statutes, regulations, and case law, and then extract data and make appropriate recommendations
Excellent project management skills with a strong sense of ownership and the ability to manage multiple priorities and conflicting demands
Good communication skills and strong team player with an ability to work across teams in various locations
