We are dedicated to the creation, expansion, and continued existence of Syringe Service Programs (SSPs) as a proven method of stopping the transmission of blood-borne pathogens in the injecting drug using community. We are also dedicated to empowering vulnerable populations by providing them with the knowledge and resources to enable them to make informed choices regarding their healthcare options.Locally, we operate the Tacoma Needle Exchange (TNE), the first legally sanctioned SSP in the United States. TNE provides Tacoma and Pierce County residents with access to harm reduction education and resources, care coordination, insurance enrollment, wound care clinics, HIV/HCV testing, and new safer injection supplies.Nationally, ourefforts are conducted through our Buyers Club (a.k.a., North American Syringe Exchange Network—NASEN), a harm reduction clearinghouse that leverages the economic power of SEPs throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands to ensure equitable access to low-cost harm reduction supplies, technical assistance, and science-based best practices for all SEPs regardless of their size or budgets.Dave Purchase Project was created, and continues to operate, with the understanding that meeting people “where they are” is the most effective method of reducing the negative consequences associated with drug use. We provide all our services free of charge in a non-judgmental manner. We encourage a collaborative environment where staff often work in teams and are expected to be proactive in their work. Staff are expected to actively participate in the improvement of service delivery and the development of programs.Position Summary: The Sales Tax Accountant facilitates DPP’s automated sales and use tax collection and remittance process for Buyers Club sales. This includes Nexus monitoring, audit support, and compliance monitoring in multiple jurisdictions. The Sales Tax Accountant is a member of DPP’s Accounting Team and is expected to have strong knowledge of multi-state sales tax processing, compliance, and research.JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESWork with Avalara sales tax system to ensure multi-state sales and use tax reports are prepared accurately, filed and funded timely, and reconciled to accounting records.Responsible for maintaining sales tax accruals and accurate month-end balance sheet account reconciliations.Review, reconcile and approve sales and use tax returns for filing.Verification of sales records to AvaTax data.Manage and apply eligible credits.Sets up ACH requests to fund sales tax remittance.Filing of sales and use tax returns not supported by sales tax software.Facilitate amended returns and refund claims.Manage overall state tax compliance calendar and ensure deadlines are met.Maintain taxability matrix in Avalara and work with operations to enter new products.Exemption certificate management, compliance monitoring, expiration management, and customer requests. Respond to customer tax inquiries and process tax credits.Nexus monitoring and management; analysis to determine order of compliance.Assist with voluntary disclosure / compliance or amnesty program filings efforts.Assist with business registration in taxing jurisdictions for sales tax compliance, including additional registrations required for doing business in each state. These may include business licenses, gross receipts taxes, and other commercial activities.Assist with charity registrations with the Attorney General’s office with applicable jurisdictions.Assist with the management of sales and use tax notices and information document requests. Communicate with states or local authorities to resolve any tax discrepancies.Tax Audits – Assist in administration of sales tax audits, including the documenting assessment, appeals, and closing agreements.Assist in planning and research projects regarding tax issues. Including the validation of state sales tax laws to ensure proper tax treatment. Document tax positions.Prepares various schedules to outside auditors.Identify, communicate, and implement process improvement opportunities.Assist with various special projects and ad hoc projects as needed.DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Degree in accounting, Tax, Finance, or Business AdministrationSales and use tax prep and filing: 3 years, preferably for multiple states.
