Job Description : Job Title: Staff AccountantReports To: ControllerFLSA Status: Exempt Position OverviewThe Staff Accountant works under the direct supervision of the Controller. This role is responsible for inputting and reviewing data into the general ledger to ensure the accurate and timely recording and reporting of financial data. The Staff Accountant is responsible for the day-to-day activities of the cash accounts and Hardgoods inventory functions of the organization. This position requires working independently more than 50% and an employee using their discretion and judgment.Essential FunctionsReasonable accommodations may enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.Partners with internal departments in developing and implementing improvements to existing Hardgoods inventory operational procedures and internal controls to maximize efficiency and cut operating costs.Prepares monthly journal entries to record inventory and cash activity and assists in the month-end close of the general ledger.Reconciles, researches, and maintains inventory and cash accounts as assigned and is able to explain and manage outstanding variances on each account.Prepares routine financial statements and performs variance analysis for review by management.Organizes and maintains various financial information and records for use by department personnel and upper management.Develops and maintains repeatable, systemic processes while finding ways to make internal team processes more efficient.Performs semi-annual price testing to maintain the accuracy of inventory valuation.Develops inventory reports and analyzes and corrects discrepancies between stock status and general ledger. Determines and analyzes root causes of variances and makes recommendations to management to improve profitability.Prepares, generates, and files financial inventory reports; reviews report monthly with management.Partners with Purchasing to manage and maintain proper inventory product categories and parts.Reviews and approves all inventory adjustments.Monitors slow-moving and obsolete inventory, records reserves, and assists with disposition.Responsible for coordinating the year-end physical inventory.Assists with auditors at year-end, including preparing schedules and providing supporting documents.Protects the organization’s value by keeping information confidential.Prepares special analysis and assumes other special activities as needed.Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities reading professional publications and maintaining personal networks, participating in professional organizations.QualificationsDegree in Business, Accounting, or any related field from an accredited institutionMust possess a strong accounting background and have excellent analytical skills; sound understanding of accounting/finance/inventory concepts, practices, procedures, and principles.Advanced Excel skills and the ability to use Office productsMinimum 3+ years of experience in Accounting, including inventoryAbility to handle confidential information in a discreet and professional mannerAbility to analyze and document complex business processesAbility to make effective decisions under pressureAbility to think analytically and should be a problem solverAbility to gather and interpret relevant data and informationStrong working knowledge and experience of accounting/finance/inventory concepts, practices, procedures, and principalsSupervisory ResponsibilityThis position has no supervisory responsibilities.Physical DemandsThe physical demands described here represent those that must be met by an employee to perform the essential functions of this job successfully.While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, stoop, and kneel. Typical days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but the employee must be available during the “core” work hours of 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive.
