Atkins a member of SNC-Lavalin is seeking an Expatriate Tax Advisor for the Americas region with an emphasis on in-house mobility tax programs, along with Canada and United States experience in expatriate income tax & social security, payroll compliance and tax equalization program administration. Partnering with other functions to support the execution of our tax programs for mobile employees, the Expatriate Tax Advisor will be part of the tax group (comprised of more than 40 professionals) of a multinational company. This position will provide critical support and advice to the Global Mobility team by acting as the primary contact on all cross-border tax related questions and issues for Global Mobility team members, Total Rewards, Human Resource Business Partners, Finance, Payroll and all assignees globally.
How will you contribute to the team?
In this role, it will be essential to be a trusted technical tax advisor to multiple functional teams. It will be equally as important to develop a deep understanding of our internal operating processes and systems to drive compliance.
Support the Expatriate Tax program including accountability for tax return filings and tax equalization calculations with our external vendor, management of tax payments and tax equalization calculation settlements for assignments and trailing income including equity compliance. Expatriate tax and social security expertise and consultation on complex transactions to assignee and business partners including policy consultation and exception management. Advising on tax technical positions and providing recommendations on Expatriate tax compliance matters to a wide range of partners.

What we are looking for?
Required Skills:
Manage the day-to-day interactions with employees, vendors and internal stakeholders primarily to ensure a smooth experience for all stakeholders, while adhering to company policies and statutory requirements.
Respond to queries related to benefits in kind included in the compensation of our international & domestic assignees and business travelers.
Partner with corporate tax, employment tax, payroll to support the cross-functional management of expatriate tax.
Liaise with the other Expatriate Tax Advisors and the tax services vendor to deliver on the assignee experience.
Support Global Mobility Business Partners and Global Mobility operations with tax requirements for cost estimates and ongoing assignee tax support.
Engage in ongoing tax discussions with assignees and internal clients throughout the various stages of the expatriate assignment.
Ability to translate complex tax technical matters into common language easily understandable by our employees and internal non-tax technical stakeholders.
Conduct research on tax issues affecting international assignees.
Provide advice and technical support on complex expatriate tax issues (e.g. termination, relocation, redundancy and salary sacrifice).
Provide advice to the business on cross-border proposals and projects.
Provide assistance regarding payroll issues for international assignments (e.g. for shadow payroll).
Support the payrolls with tax technical advice, including employee benefit related to expatriate employees.
Contribute to the successful delivery of expatriate tax projects and ensuring technical excellence.
Prepare compensation breakdowns.
Additional opportunities will be both self-identified and assigned by Senior Manager Expatriate Tax always in alignment with team and company goals.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related fields.
Recognized accounting designation would be an asset.
Knowledge of international tax laws would be an asset.
3+ years of global mobility tax experience, with experience managing in-house mobility tax programs and/or consulting/accounting firms experience.
Demonstrated experience in mobility taxation, global compensation reporting, including systems, vendors, in-house processes and related operations.
Demonstrable knowledge of key concepts of global expatriate tax, interaction of taxes between jurisdictions, knowledge of Double Tax Agreements.
Experience owning highly confidential situations and data that requires 100% data privacy and security.
Customer service skills and proven experience performing in a fast-paced environment.
Self-starter with knowledge to work independently with minimal instruction on day-to-day tasks.
Excellent organizational skills with an ability to take ownership for the workload as well as good time management skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks whilst working to deadlines and managing expectations.
Experience working in a diverse, cross-cultural team environment to achieve goals, including flexible approach to work with an ability and good understanding of working with a cross border team.
Fluent in English with good written and verbal communication skills. French would be an asset.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience developing methods to automate manual processes, proactive in support of team members, highlighting issues and areas for improvement.
Experience working with Assignment Pro (Equus)
Experience working in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment, including the knowledge to flex to changing circumstances and priorities.
Advanced computer skills including MS Office applications, especially MS Excel.
