Freelancers have served big industry brands as well as smaller franchises. Fitting into this structure, the
Content Editor is the pillar and final content expert who ensures quality delivery for each client.
Job Responsibilities:
1. Understanding specific project guidelines of the work for the day
2. Coordinating with writers for quality content and timely deliveries
3. Checking every piece thoroughly within stipulated timelines
4. Delivering content to the Operations Manager
Understanding specific project guidelines of the work for the day
The editor will receive the work for the day from the Operations Manager. Accordingly, the editor
must understand the client’s requirements thoroughly. How can this be done:
1. Watch and understand the full recording of the client meeting to learn everything about the
project such as the client’s business outline, requirement type, motive of the content,
additional expectations of the client, etc.
2. Read the full Business Understanding Document (BUD) to ensure nothing is missed out.
3. Call up the Operations Manager in case of any further doubts.
Coordinating with writers for quality content and timely deliveries
1. The editor must coordinate with the writers to get submissions timely, in case of writer
delays.
2. In case of any major revisions needed, the editor must send back the file to the writer with
the revision comments. In case of minor revisions, editors must not delay and sort the issues
on their own. As a thumb rule, editors make around 30% changes in submission. If the
Submission needs more changes, it is sent back to the writer with revision comments.
Beyond that, it can be rejected and reassigned to another writer.
Checking every piece thoroughly within stipulated timelines
8-point checklist of how to check a submission:
1. Read client instructions carefully for every content piece. Always check the client needs,
client website, reference link, keywords, etc. Content should be related to the topic and the
client specifics.
2. Check the word count is being followed. Nothing less than the word count is accepted.
3. Ensure to follow the format that is provided by the client, if any. Recheck every submission.
4. In case there is no format, we follow a general format of introduction, subheads and bullets,
and conclusion (this is subject to change, based on content type).
5. Check the vocabulary and sentence construction. Make changes wherever needed.
6. Check on Grammarly and SmallSEOTools.
7. Check the keyword use. 2% density or otherwise, if given by the client.
8. Use proper font, alignment, and bold/italics.
Delivering content to the Operations Manager
The Content Editor must view every piece from two perspectives: client perspective and online
reader perspective. Once the editor is convinced with the quality they have approved, they must
pass it to the Operations Manager.
