The Michigan House Democratic Caucus seeks a highly skilled writer and communications analyst to join our team as a Communications Advisor.

The Communications Advisor will support the House Democratic Caucus and its members by developing proactive, consistent and effective communications materials for constituents and members of the press. The ideal candidate will be a strong writer with an eye for detail as well as style.

Job Responsibilities
The Communications Advisor, who will be based in Lansing and report directly to the Communications Director, will be responsible for the following:
Writing and editing external content for a diverse group of House members, including but not limited to press releases, talking points, op-eds and newsletter articles.
Establishing relationships with members and office staff based on constant communication and regular meetings to share resources and provide support.
Coordinating interview requests for member offices and, in consultation with the Communications Director, providing guidance and talking points to members.
Organizing press conferences for member offices, including making pitch calls to reporters both in Lansing and across the state.
Pitching op-eds for member offices that result in our op-eds being placed in the best possible media markets.
Serving as a liaison between graphic designers and member offices on newsletter and other design requests.
Working alongside the social media coordinator to develop social media content for the caucus and member pages.

Required Education and Experience
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: We are seeking candidates who excel in writing and problem solving and have experience working with diverse teams. You should have:
A proven track record of consistently meeting established deadlines and using time effectively while managing multiple, simultaneous projects in a fast-paced environment.
The ability to be an excellent team player and collaborator.
Excellent writing skills, including knowledge of AP style, and a high attention to detail.
Knowledge of current events and Michigan House Democrats’ priorities.
A passion for working for progressive causes and elected officials.
An ongoing interest in continued learning and adaptation based on best practices.

Retirement

Employees receive a minimum 4% state contribution toward their retirement fund. If an employee elects to contribute more, the state will match that percentage (up to 3%).
