Supplemental Questions:
The primary role of this position is leading cave tours, but it includes other duties as well. What duties could you see yourself performing as part of a team running a 3000-acre park with a cave, two visitor centers and a campground?
Special Information:

These seasonal positions are responsible for leading groups of up to 30 visitors on the two-mile, two-hour cave tour. While conducting tours the guide conveys to visitors the natural, historic, and cultural features of the cave and park. Guides are also responsible for the safety and comfort of visitors. Guides provide information and direction to visitors on a regular basis and perform routine maintenance tasks when necessary. Routine cleaning duties are also important parts of this position more so while COVID-19 affects Montana State Park operations. Must have a valid driver’s license. Weekend and summer holiday work required.
This position runs from May1-Sept 30 at the longest or from mid-June to Mid-August at the shortest. The work week is 40 hours with variable day time shifts. Some part time short-term worker positions are also potentially available.
Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park lies between Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks and is surrounded by beautiful public lands featuring majestic Rocky Mountain scenery as well as world-class blue-ribbon trout streams. This area is an outdoor lovers haven with endless recreational opportunities throughout the summer season.
Job Duties
Conducts up to three guided tours of the cave daily with up to 30 visitors per tour. Interprets geological and historical aspects of the cave in an entertaining and informative manner. Monitors tour groups to ensure visitor safety and that cave resources are protected. Regularly uses effective communications skills and practices quality customer service principles. May train new seasonal staff on all facets of conducting cave tours, routine maintenance tasks, and Upper Visitor Center information desk operations. May mentor new guides in training, and/or park volunteers, AmeriCorps members and student interns. Staffs visitor center information desk; answers phone and personal inquiries from the general public; explains Park, Parks Division and Department programs and rules and regulations. May sell cave tour, day use and camping permits, park passes and assist in tracking visitation. Disseminates information on other state parks or tourist attractions in the area as well as fishing access sites, and historical sites. When working in this position the incumbent must gain a working knowledge of Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park, the Parks Division and Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks policies. Frequently performs visitor center and restroom cleaning, garbage collection, light landscaping and facilities maintenance duties.
Physical and Environmental Demands:
To perform the duties of this position, one must be able to walk/hike up to 6 miles each day which includes climbing nearly 1000 vertical feet and navigating a total of 1800 uneven and dimly lit stairs. Applicants also need to be comfortable in tight dark areas and around potentially large numbers of bats. This position also requires up to 30 minutes of rigorous activity at a time in potentially very hot, cold or even smoky conditions 3 times daily. Other duties of this job can require being able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds comfortably. This position requires work on weekends and holidays.

Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Behaviors):
To excel in this position, one should have a comfort with public speaking and customer service and basic conflict management skills. It is important to have or develop the ability comprehend and interpret park resources, primarily cave resources but also such topics as history, birds, plants, mammals, cultural artifacts as well as local and regional geology. Safety awareness/training is a bonus (prefer first aid and CPR), and the ability to perform basic park maintenance functions.
Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):
The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through combination of education and experience equivalent to three years of high school with some work or club experience featuring public/customer service and interest/experience in one of the following fields of study: park or natural resources management, communications, education, public speaking, interpretation, tourism, history, psychology, sociology, archaeology, paleontology, fish and wildlife management, and geology. Other combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
