Summary/Objective: The Food Bank of Northern Nevada values food equity in our work to improve food security and address social determinants of health that lead to inequitable access to food, as well as other needed social services and supports. The Community Engagement Specialist will work across program lines to engage and connect with at risk or underserved communities throughout our service area to advance food equity and improve food security. Through outreach, engagement and community organizing, they will help to improve food supports in partnership with communities. This is a grant funded position. . Requirements:
Essential Functions including but not limited to:
Administrative Roles:

Work cross departmentally to support a multi-pronged approach to improving equitable access to all existing food support programs.
Utilize cultural diversity and inclusion principles.
Develop and evaluate community engagement and community organizing programs.
Ability to understand complex issues that lead to food insecurity and the impact that food insecurity has on health and health outcomes.

Community outreach and engagement:

Coordinate community meetings and opportunities, in partnership with FBNN team, to engage new community members who support improved access to healthy food.
Develop and foster partnerships within the community to educate, engage and collaborate with individuals on food security, food equity and access.
Serve as a liaison for community members and community organizations to a wide variety of resources to increase awareness of existing food support programs.
Develop community outreach and engagement training standard that can be administered to other groups throughout our service area.

Data Analysis and Evaluation:

Identify gaps in food access, present findings and collaborate with internal and external partners to support strategy to reduce gaps and improve access.

Supervisory Responsibility This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment and Physical Demands Work is typically performed in an office environment while sitting at a computer for extended periods. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts when working with office machines. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms when working with documents, files, computers, or office machines. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, crouch, or kneel when working with files. May lift, move and carry objects from 20 to 40 pounds, such as boxes containing office and other supplies. Periodically may work outside and be exposed to the elements.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work This is a full-time (Nonexempt) position. Typical days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., however weekends and evenings will be required, in an effort to accommodate community activities and events.
Travel Travel is essential in this position. Travel will primarily be for community events and partner meetings. When possible, a food bank vehicle will be made available for use.

Intermediate to advanced skills in using Microsoft Professional Office (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, PowerPoint) and Internet search engines and database
Ability to meet organization’s production and quality standards.

Qualifications
Required Education & Experience

High school diploma or the equivalent required. Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree desirable.
Written and oral proficiency in English with proficiency in Spanish desirable
Demonstrated ability and experience in community organizing principles, techniques and practices that engage community members in advocating for their food needs as well as the needs of their neighborhood.
2+ years of proven experience working with and/or engaging with communities of color.
Demonstrated commitment to public service and value principles of equity, diversity and inclusion.

Preferred Experience

Lived experience through food insecurity desirable.
Certification in cultural competency completed, or willingness to become certified in first 90 days.
Community Health Worker certified, or willingness to become certified in first 90 days.
Have existing relationships within the community or the ability to quickly establish such relationships.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications
1. Valid NV driver’s license and proof insurance.
