Job Description : The City of North Las Vegas Fire Department is establishing a hiring list for Firefighters and Firefighter/Paramedics for upcoming fire academies in 2022 and 2023. The City of North Las Vegas is home to nearly 260,000 residents, with a diverse population and diverse economy. The Fire Department currently staffs 8 fire stations throughout the City, with approximately 190 civilian and sworn personnel.
Candidates must apply at www.CNLVJobs.com. The application process will be open from February 14, 2022 to April 4, 2022.
Qualifying applicants will then be directed to complete an online exam through National Testing Network Candidates must register and take hire examination through National Testing Network www.nationaltestingnetwork.com no later than March 31, 2022.
Qualifying candidates will then be invited to an oral interview that will take place in late April in order to establish a hiring list.
Candidates must be a minimum of 18 years at age at the time of application
JOB SUMMARY: Learn to extinguish fires, perform rescue operations and maintain fire station facilities and equipment. This class is distinguished from the Firefighter in that entry level positions have not achieved successful completion of the City of North Las Vegas Fire Training Academy.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Participate in Fire Academy training program and in on-the-job training activities; drill with engine company members; attend special instruction sessions in fire fighting, rescue and emergency medical procedures and techniques.
Learn the proper procedures for responding to fire alarms, including laying lines of hose, directing streams of water, carrying and setting up ladders and other equipment, including motorized equipment, ventilating buildings, performing rescue work and cleaning up after fires to limit water damage.
Learn the proper procedures and techniques for rendering first aid and emergency medical assistance.
Learn to clean and service fire fighting apparatus and equipment, including motorized equipment; test, wash and hang hose; learn to repair hose couplings and other equipment.
Learn and follow all applicable safety procedures.
Meet the criteria established by the department for acceptable performance at each step or level of training in order to progress to the next level.
May be required to drive city vehicles to pick up supplies and equipment, or to drive to and from training exercises.
Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Performs fire fighting, emergency medical service, hazardous materials and fire prevention activities with primary purpose of saving lives and property.

Upon completion of your scheduled exam, scores are automatically forwarded to The City of North Las Vegas. Candidates who attain a passing score on the entry level exam will be placed on The City of North Las Vegas’s eligibility list.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent. College level course work in fire science, fire administration or a related field is desirable.
Any combination of education, training and experience which produces the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job and related to the essential functions of the position.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

Candidates must be in excellent physical condition.

Licenses and Certifications:

Must possess a valid state driver’s license and maintains satisfactory motor vehicle record with the ability to obtain appropriate Nevada state driver’s license within required time frame.
Must obtain Class C with F endorsement or comparable license from their state of primary residence within two (2) years from the date of hire.
Must have a valid Southern Nevada Health District or National Registry EMT, EMT-A or Paramedic certification/license at time of conditional job offer.

Must be able to successfully complete a thorough background check, drug screen, physical examination, and psychological evaluation prior to formal job offer.

Learn to understand pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes, ordinances and regulations, including current City of North Las Vegas Policies.
Firefighting is very physically demanding. Firefighters carry 80 to 100 lbs. of equipment – such as hoses, axes, ladders, chain saws and extinguishers – into and around the fire scene to rescue victims and extinguish the fire. This may include climbing many flights of stairs.
Responsible for the clean-up of fire scenes. Carry, scoop, shovel, sweep and mop excess water and debris caused by the fire and firefighting efforts. Firefighters tear down or shore up weak or dangerous parts of fire structures such as floors, roofs or overhangs.
Use ladders and work at heights to rescue victims and fight fires. After locating and freeing the victim, firefighters must determine the safest path of evacuation; may be required to lift and/or carry the victim with or without assistance in dangerous situations.
Work under strict discipline and follow orders.
Demonstrate mechanical aptitude as required in the operation of firefighting equipment.
Demonstrate physical aptitude as required by essential functions.
Read, understand and retain the information in technical materials, rules, regulations and procedures related to fire fighting.
Read street maps and navigate streets.
Learn to operate and perform basic service and troubleshooting on small motors.
Learn to operate all firefighting equipment, both manually operated and motorized.
Learn to analyze emergency situations and quickly determine effective courses of action.
Learn the layout of the City’s major cross streets and street numbering system.
Learn to read and interpret geographic information systems maps.
Learn to identify various hazardous materials.
Learn and follow all applicable safety procedures.
Retain presence of mind in emergency situations.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work in an emergency fire fighting environment; work in medical emergency situations, including vehicle accidents and other types of medical and rescue emergencies; work in intense life-threatening conditions; exposure to fire, smoke, bodily fluids, heights and noise.
Essential functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for running, walking, crawling, climbing, stooping and heavy lifting while wearing heavy protective equipment; work in inclement weather conditions for prolonged periods of time.
Must be able to work any shift or days of the week.
Regular and timely attendance is required.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

All Firefighter/Paramedics begin at Step 1 with an annual starting salary of $63,617.08 following successful completion of the fire academy.
All Firefighters begin at Step 1 with an annual starting salary of $55,318.93 with and EMT certification and $57,639.29 with an Advanced EMT certification following successful completion of the fire academy.
