Position : Lab Manager
Job Description : The Lab Manager oversees and maintains all oil production, medication formulating, and testing throughout the Processing Suite. Leadership and supervision extend to all oil production steps, analytical testing, formulation of medications, and all associated departmental functions. Also, provide leadership guidance and assistance as required in all Post-Harvest and Filling/Packaging operations. The Lab Manager must monitor and maintain the production facility in accordance with the State of NV regulations and standards set by the company.
Responsibilities and General Job Duties:
Full scientific oversight of the Labs and all processes
Manage extraction process, purification process, formulation process, and analytical testing in their entirety
Build a strong high functioning team and manage through both engagement and accountability
Complete employee evaluations and performance-based coaching
Resource planning and staff scheduling
Develop and oversee all applicable training programs
Capacity and production planning for departments based on constraints and calculated requirements
Validations and qualifications of SOPs, equipment, and methods
Complete R&D projects as required for product and process expansion
Execute on short-term projects as well as long-term vision for the departments
Write and review all department-specific SOPs, Work Instructions, Forms, or other technical and controlled documents
Implement continuous improvement initiatives including six sigma and 5S
Managing procurement process of department and maintaining an OPEX budget
Ensure all associated personnel are trained in and comply with all Nevada applicable regulations
Ensure processing operation is fully compliant with state regulations and state/federal law
Assure that operation adheres to all business and industry license requirements
Specific Job Duties and Qualifications:
Cannabis industry-specific processes related to Processing (extraction, purification, formulation, filling, and packaging)
QA/QC duties that require analytical testing for quality and consistency
Oversight of highly sophisticated CO2 based extraction equipment; Processing concentrates and extracts with heat and pressure
Operating, maintaining, repairing, and adjusting laboratory equipment such as winterizers, pumps, balances, centrifuges, roto-evaporates, decarb ovens, stills, homogenizers, and other laboratory equipment
Storing supplies and equipment, disposal of waste according to guidelines, and keeping laboratory, storerooms, harvest rooms, and working areas immaculate
Able to process samples by collection, extraction, preparing for analysis, and quantifying results
Scientific laboratory procedures and techniques as used in a chemistry laboratory including methods of measurements
Health and safety practices and precautions (including HazCom) applicable to a laboratory and manufacturing
Development of automation tools specifically related to filling and packaging (injectors, cappers, de-dusters, case counters, box erectors, carton sealers, labelers, etc.)
Maintaining strict inventory compliance and records of all controlled substances tracked through BioTrackTHC
Requirements and Education:
Must be at least 21 years of age
Subject to background check per state cannabis regulations
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and complete repetitive tasks as required
Degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering preferred
Scientific writing for processes, training, and procedures that require technical documentation
Strong verbal and communication skills
Ability to work in a cross-functional team environment
Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite with strong abilities within Excel
At least 2 years’ experience in a manufacturing setting required
Experience managing/supervising a large team
Proven ability to adapt to an organization’s unique culture, environment, employees, and priorities
Knowledge of packaging and processing technology
Experience with training and the ability to teach concepts and practices to team members
Able to think strategically and creatively
Able to effectively analyze and interpret data
Able to prioritize and meet deadlines, and to manage multiple production issues with sense of urgency
Able to handle challenging or conflict situations with tact and professionalism
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to promote a team environment
Be able to meet goals driven by KPI’s and communicate the results of those KPI’s to senior management
Must be hands-on, high energy, flexible, and responsive to a dynamic work environment
Ability to schedule and plan workloads, implement systems and projects that align with strategic objectives of the company.

Work Environment:
The noise level in the work environment is normal. The employee is frequently exposed to an environment of natural chemical fumes, herbal aromas, airborne particles, exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. Employee will have moderate exposure to conditions such as dust and particles that affect the respiratory system, eyes, or the skin, depending on department job assignments. Personal Protective Equipment is provided for employees to utilize
Directly supervises the Extraction and Purification staff and accomplishes department results by communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results; coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; initiating, coordinating, and enforcing systems, policies, and procedures.
This position and all output metrics report directly to the Lab Manager. These reports will include all daily production metrics, establishing actual vs. expected production results with explanations of variances, staff absences and all associated production paperwork.
Shows the capability to effectively communicate with management and co-workers on a professional basis. This will include all team leads, supervisors, and upper management.
Preparing for efficient production by reviewing manufacturing schedule; studying and clarifying specifications; calculating requirements; assembling and weighing plant materials and supplies for extraction.
Performing all training required for the extraction team, including maintaining all required documentation.
Operating highly sophisticated extraction equipment; Processing concentrates and extracts.
Cleaning and maintaining extraction equipment and laboratory facility following current good manufacturing practices (cGMP), and standard operating procedures; complying with legal regulations; monitoring environment.
Operating, maintaining, adjusting, troubleshooting, and repairing laboratory equipment such as extraction vessels, heating jackets, CO2 pumps, CO2 recycler, balances, centrifuges, and other laboratory equipment.
Operating extraction equipment to harvest terpene extracts and cannabinoid-containing extracts utilizing both fresh-frozen and CO2 processes.
Operating highly sophisticated purification equipment to convert crude oil into decarboxylated oil.
Following procedures for extract purification including ethanol addition, winterization, centrifugation, distillation, filtration, rotary evaporation, and decarboxylation.
Assisting with the development of further purification processes and in-process materials, including processes for new products.
Maintaining inventory records of supplies, materials, equipment PM’s as required, and preparing requisitions as needed, maintaining inventory within state-issued cannabis inventory software.
Storing supplies and equipment, disposing of waste according to state guidelines, and keeping laboratory, storerooms and working areas immaculate.
Performing clerical work related to laboratory activities such as word processing, record keeping, and filing.
Maintaining material safety data sheets for all department chemicals and products.

Physical Demands
