Job Description : The Role: We are looking for Law Enforcement Technician to support the Police Department. That performs clerical, reception and communications duties and technical tasks relative to the booking and release of inmates and maintaining the safety and security of the facility. Assures the establishment, updating, and maintenance of accurate records for those past and present persons incarcerated at the correctional center; maintains inmate personal property; and serves as initial contact for all courts and transportation of inmates including warrant confirmation. Processes and files documents, answers telephones, interacts with general public, provides general information, maintains reports and files, collects money, and performs complex, specialized clerical duties relative to confidential police and inmate records. Performs operation of computerized electronic security and communications equipment and devices to monitor the safety, security, transportation, and placement of inmates assigned to the correctional center; controls access to correctional center by electronically opening and closing doors.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Inputs and verifies data into the computer system to create or update inmate records. Interfaces with inmates to assist with providing and verifying information, processing transactions and providing services. Categorizes and maintains manual and/or computerized filing systems; enters data; cross-indexes and files documents alphabetically, numerically or by other designated classification. Establishes, updates, and maintains accurate records on present and past inmates.

Receives inmate cash and valuables at time of booking, issues receipts and returns valuables at time of release.

Maintains inmate personal property; completes court preparation; prepares and verifies inmate documents and enters disposition information for Justice Court.

Serves as initial contact for transportation of inmates; verifies various legal documents.

Interacts with others in the department, other agencies and the public to resolve more complex problems and questions.

Answers the telephone, routes calls, provides public with general information regarding department services, and responds to general public requests with limited supervision from supervisor.

Prepares master inmate files for retention purposes.

Interacts with other agencies requesting information or documents related to warrants or other related matters.

Routinely sends and receives documents relating to inmates from various courts and detention centers.

Trains new and less experienced staff.

Operates various electronic equipment and devices to control and monitor the safe and secure movement and placement of inmates within the correctional center.

Allows only authorized person/vehicles to enter/exit the correctional center using various surveillance and communications methods to determine proper identification; activates electronic gates and doors to allow access or exit.

Records all inmate movement in and out of the correctional center for work crews, court dates, visitation, recreation and releases.

Maintains visual observation using a bank of monitors of the premises to detect any breaches of safety and/or security from within or adjacent to the correctional center.

Monitors fire alarms in assigned buildings; monitors Corrections Officers distress alarms; maintains contact with all officers, units and work crews on assignment.

Dispatch officers/staff concerning routine tasks as instructed; coordinates/dispatches internal and external resources including police, fire, ambulance, or public utilities during emergency situations.

Maintains log of dispatch activities and a variety of automated logs, records and files; perform a variety of record keeping, filing, indexing and other general clerical work.

Enter and retrieve information concerning inmates using manual/computerized record keeping system to respond to inquiries within legal guidelines from bail bondsman, attorneys, government agencies, and the public.

Interfaces with the public to assist with providing general information, materials, and/or routine services.

Maintains an accurate count of all inmates by Housing Unit for verification by Corrections Officers.

Screens and verifies warrant information.

Performs cashier services for bail bonds and commissary purposes.

Receives and responds to emergency and non-emergency telephone calls within the correctional center.

Performs other related work as required.

Qualifications and Attributes:

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent and four years of highly responsible office support experience.

Experience working in a law enforcement agency preferable.

Continuing education in secretarial science, business or a job-related field preferable.

Licenses and Certifications:

Required to possess a valid state driver’s license and maintain a satisfactory motor vehicle record with the ability to obtain an appropriate Nevada state driver’s license within the required time frame.

Must type 30 accurate net words per minute as demonstrated by a typing certificate dated no more than one year prior to the date of application.

NCIC Certification within six months of hire/reclassification.

May be required to obtain or possess Notary Public certification.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of data entry and filing techniques and practices.

Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and the ability to speak clearly.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, other departments, governmental agencies and the public.

Interact with people during stressful or emotional situations.

Analytical skills necessary to perform numerical calculations to obtain totals, balances and verify information from various different forms and transfer to computers or manual reports.

Deals with confidential and sensitive information.

Ability to learn the rules, regulations, operating policies and procedures of the Law Enforcement Support Technician functions.

Communicating orally with others in order to give and receive information in a courteous manner.

Ability to use word processing, other software, computers and peripheral equipment assigned.

Ability to assemble, organize, and maintain complex records; and prepare summaries of records and reports.

Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail with constant breaks in concentration associated with answering the phones or speaking in person to citizens requiring assistance.

Skill in the organization and prioritization of tasks.

Ability to perform accurate mathematical calculations.

Perform multiple tasks simultaneously.

Typing to input and retrieve data on a computer

Required to integrate and interpret data from various sources.

Multi-frequency radio communications and operations.

Work under pressure, exercise good judgment and make sound decisions in emergency situations.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This classification provides services 24 hours each day, seven days each week. Shift work, including swing and graveyard shifts, weekends and working on holidays may be required.

Working conditions are typically moderately quiet, but can be loud in certain sections of the correctional center.

While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is on occasion exposed to loud noise, dirt, offensive language, offensive actions, offensive smells, bodily fluids, arrestees, inmates and inmate property; occasional exposure to sick inmates and typical jail hygiene problems, potential hostile environments typical to a correctional center.

While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to work in a typical office environment, use standard office equipment, read printed material and a computer terminal/screen, communicate in person and over the telephone, and is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to fingers, handle, or feel, climb or balance, talk and hear, and lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
